Aggiungi al carrelloQuarter Leather. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. W HEATH ROBINSON, etc (illustratore). 1st Edition. A lovely set of The Strand Magazine - a continuous run of 34 volumes from January 1898 to December 1915. Bound in contemporary morocco-style bonded leather (ie: a shredded leather mix on a cloth substrate) and green paper covered boards. The green spines are gilt, bright and clean, with some variation of tone, due to sunning. Some volumes are cracked at the joints, with occasional loss at the joint and some rubbing to head and heels of most spines. Two volumes show minor loss on the backstrips. Overall, they present very well on the shelf and will be excellent for someone looking to not only own these excellent cultural artefacts, but also have them on display. All page edges are marbled. The internals are excellent: bright, clean, without any damp marking, still with white and bright paper. There are numerous authors in these books, but a few highlights include the first appearances of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, with Reminiscences of Sherlock Holmes, The Valley of Fear and, of course, The Hound of the Baskervilles. Other Conan Doyle works included are The Lost World - the great dinosaur novel that inspired countless others, and The Horror of the Heights, an early aviation horror story, as well as Sir Nigel and much more. This set also includes H G Wells's The War of the Worlds, early stories by P G Wodehouse, a profile of Kaiser Wilhelm long before the Great War, and stories by Count Leo Tolstoy in first translation. As a cultural artefact, the collection is wonderful. Complete original Strands with Sherlock Holmes Stories alone are commanding prices around £300 to £500 for two volumes at time of writing, so this is a really nicely priced collection. Dimensions: The books are 18 cm deep, 24.5 cm tall and stretch for 168 cm along the shelf. NOTE ON SHIPPING: This set will weigh around 62 kilos when packed and will need to be sent in 2 or 3 parcels. Shipping to the USA will be in the area of £350. Shipping within the UK will be free. For other countries, please enquire. This really is an excellent looking set, and I recommend it as a great way to enjoy this extraordinary title. Book.
