Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. A timely contribution in this era of authoritarianism, right-wing populist movements, identity formation, and political correctness. In groups the most contradictory ideas can exist side by side and tolerate each other, without any conflict arising from the logical contradiction between them, wrote Freud in his 1921 book Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego. One hundred years later, in an age of war, social networks, and ubiquitous threats to democracy, the questions raised by Freud are as relevant as ever. In today's mass and group formations, psychological processes and mechanisms can be recognized as they were described by Freud a century ago: compliance, hypnotization, regression, idealization, identification, and fusion with the Other. This anthology is the result of an interdisciplinary symposium organized by the Sigmund Freud Museum, Vienna. In their contributions, scholars from psychoanalysis, philosophy, sociology and literary studies present critical re-readings of the text and focus on current issues such as the rise of right-wing populist movements, the role of the narcissistic leader, and mass phenomena in the digital age. This book will be made open access within three years of publication thanks to Path to Open, a program developed in partnership between JSTOR, the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), University of Michigan Press, and The University of North Carolina Press to bring about equitable access and impact for the entire scholarly community, including authors, researchers, libraries, and university presses around the world. Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -Psychoanalyst Jeanne Wolff Bernstein analyzes the works of the French painter Édouard Manet (1832-1883) from different perspectives. Instead of speculating about Manet's biography, she links only historically available data of the artist's life to his paintings. His numerous references from the history of painting are subsequently explained as re-interpretations of these historical works and as interpretations of his painterly genealogy. With this method it becomes clear how Manet expresses the contradictions inherent in his era and also subtly criticizes his social milieu at the same time. The primary text for an understanding of the enigmatic relationship between artist, painting, and viewer is Freud's essay »The Joke and its Relation to the Unconscious« (1905), in which the teller of a joke invites his listener to complete his joke through an absent, but imagined third person. In a similar way, Manet incorporates the unconscious processes of his spectators to complete the scenes depicted on his canvases.Jacques Lacan's theory about the gaze, in particular his realization that the picture is in the eye of the beholder, but that the beholder was already fore-seen in the picture, is relevant for an understanding of the identificatory processes taking place between painting, beholder, and artist. These three perspectives upon Manet's work open up a new psychoanalytic approach to the study of painting which can also be used for other fields of aesthetics. 336 pp. Englisch.

This book examines the work of French painter Edouard Manet from an unusual perspective. In contrast to conventional psycho-biographical approaches, the author develops a psychoanalytic pictorial analysis of Manet's oeuvre that emphasizes his painterly genealogy more than his personal past.
