Recent elaborate tan half calf with marbled boards. Top board has morocco label with gilt text and border. , A collection of four aquatints on the subject of Beagles, Harriers and Hounds from the early 19th century. Dean Wolstenholme, the elder (1757?1837), was an animal painter from Yorkshire. His early life was rather that of…an enthusiastic sportsman than of an artist, though he occasionally produced representations of a few sporting subjects with such success that Sir Joshua Reynolds is said to have predicted that he would be a painter in earnest before he died. In about 1800 he came to London and settled in East Street, Red Lion Square. In 1803 he exhibited his first picture (?Coursing?) at the Royal Academy. From this year to 1824 a long series of animal pictures from his hand appeared at the academy and his fame grew. Bookplate on verso of top cover showing that this was from the Joel Spitz collection and was purchased from Button, Chicago, in 1952., Size : Large Oblong Folio (506x6, Illustrated with 4 large aquatint plates by R.G . A very fine series from one of the greatest British sporting artists of his time "Dean Wolstenholme Snr became an artist in middle life after losing his then not inconsiderable we…alth in a property deal which went wrong. Before moving to London in about 1800 he had lived in Herfordshire and Essex, pursuing a happy life devoted to foxhunting and coursing, painting a little for his own pleasure. In London he had to paint in earnest, bringing to the city memories of his earlier years. He exhibited a painting of coursing at the Royal Academy in 1803; fox hunting in 1804. and so on until shortly before his death in 1837. A large number of his hunting, coursing and shooting pictures were engraved. [His son, Charles Dean Wolstenholme Jnr. (1793-1883) also became an animal painter of note.] Both father and son populated their landscapes with horses and horsemen rather than painting commissioned equestrian portraits; and the pleasure of their work is their skill in depicting the English (Home Counties) countryside." His detailed works helped define the visual vocabulary of Georgian country pursuits. Condition: fair, given age. Noticeable hole in image area, additional tears, backed, minor foxing and staining, margins somewhat worn. Still strong colour. Sold waf. Colour printed aquatint heightened with gum arabic. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition with the exception of being trimmed within the platemark on the bottom margin. Four puncture holes on left margin where it was bound. Image size: 9 5/8 x 12 3/4 inches. A handsome aquatint of three gentlemen setting off to course a…hare, by S. Himley after a painting by the celebrated sporting artist Dean Wolstenholme. Around 1820, S. Himley produced two sets of hunting aquatints after skilled paintings by Wolstenholme. These sets, expertly engraved in aquatint, were comprised of four plates illustrating shooting, and four plates depicting coursing. As with many of the prints after Wolstenholme's paintings it is difficult to decipher whether Himley's works reproduced paintings by Dean Wolstenhome Snr. or by his son Dean Wolstenholme Jnr. The Wolstenholme's were both talented sporting artists who earned a reputation as skilled animal painters. Both father and son exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and garnered countless commissions from eager enthusiasts. They specialized in fine hunting scenes and had a natural flare for depicting movement, which lends their work an animation and life, which is truly compelling. This stunning print is lovely example of Himley's skilled hand and a wonderful example of English sporting art at its best. Siltzer, The Story of British Sporting Prints 286-313, 364.
