When he was seventeen, he joined the Waffen SS because the line was shorter than at the the other divisions. He was wounded and eventually lost a leg on the Easter front. Seventeen years after the war on a summer vaction with his wife brother and sister-in-law, Woltersdorf revisits the French countryside where he had been during the war and finds his French sweetheart and lears that he has a son, Julien. During the British and American occupation all Waffen SS were sought as war criminals and he had the tattoo on the upper left arm that oculd not be disguised. So he changed names and ran but was eventually captured and imprisoned. He was not guilty of any war crimes and had not been a Nazi, but he makes no apologies for his countrymen.
