He came to the United States in 1920 with his father as a "paper son," entering under the assumed identity Look Tai Yow and enduring interrogation and detention at the Angel Island immigration station under the Chinese Exclusion Act; he did not become a citizen until 1946. A scholarship to the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles set him on his path (he graduated in 1930), and in the 1930s he painted murals for the Works Progress Administration (WPA), exhibited with the modernist Chinese-American circle around Chinatown, and designed greeting cards for Hallmark. His most consequential work came at Disney, which hired him as an "in-betweener" in 1938: his small, atmospheric pastel and watercolor sketches, drawn from Song-dynasty landscape painting, became the visual foundation of Bambi (1942), setting its misty, suggestive forest backgrounds, yet he was credited only as a "background" artist and was fired in the aftermath of the 1941 animators' strike.
