"The scarlet woman of Wall Street" was the nickname of the four-times bankrupt Erie Railroad Company when in 1939 this able executive was named as a court-appointed trustee; within two years he had got company out of receivership, and in 1941 was named its president, serving in that capacity until 1949, finally leaving the company in a profitable state in 1956.
