Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book presents the results of the first study of a newly-discovered species of bacteria. This rare microbe is named Bacillus murinus Manilae, a term derived from the Latin for "mouse of Manila". This unprecedented report contributes essential foundations for future investigations…and advancements in the field as it provides a comprehensive overview of the bacterium's morphology, cultural characteristics, biochemical reactions, pathogenicity, and serology. The author highlights that the microbe has been identified as the causative agent of a specific disease in mice and has been demonstrated to be transmissible to other animals, including humans. Bacillus murinus Manilae is found to possess unique characteristics that differentiate it from other known bacteria, adding to our understanding of bacterial diversity. Moreover, this book provides valuable information for researchers, students, and practitioners in the field of microbiology, bacteriology, and infectious diseases. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Aggiungi al carrelloA 19th-century American penmanship manual, promoting the Carstairian system, by G.W. Woolley of Philadelphia, featuring twenty-eight color plates for copying. The twenty-eight plates, from wood engravings, feature white script on a variety of colored backgrounds. The Carstairian system was part of what has been described as "a n…ew, more conservative, approach to the teaching of handwriting" that began to emerge about the turn of the 19th century, one that sought "to exert greater control over the body and mind of the writer" (Clayton). Joseph Carstairs (17831844) was a writing instructor in London's West End. Originally a tailor from Sunderland, he learned penmanship from James Mowat in Edinburgh. Carstairs was one of those instructors who "advocated a new writing action, which includes movements from the shoulder and not only the hand" (Clayton). Such movement was "only possible by making the trunk of the body rigid and the writing hand relatively immobile, even as the arm moves the hand and pen about the surface. To encourage this stability," Carstairs and his disciples "advocated the use of bindings, elaborate ribbons that tied the hand in the correct position on to the pen; writers might also be tied to their chairs to ensure correct posture" (Clayton). While the Carstairian system "eventually faded out in Britainit went on to have a considerable influence in Europe and the United States," where it was adapted and popularized by Benjamin Franklin Foster, an American whose copybooks sold over two million copies throughout England, France, Germany, and the U.S. (Clayton). Foster would later come to reject the Carstairian system, but others continued to champion it. Among them was the author of the present work, G.W. Woolley, described on the titlepage as a "teacher of practical penmanship" in Philadelphia. A. M'Elroy's Philadelphia Directory for 1840 lists a "teacher," George W. Woolley, located at SE 5th and Walnut streets. Nash records other similar publications by WoolleyParts I and II of Woolley's Copy Books, on the Carstairian System of Penmanship (Philadelphia, 1841) and Woolley's Carstairian System of Penmanship (Philadelphia, 1842)but not this one. As Woolley explains in his preliminary notice "To the Public," the Carstairian system, as laid out here, "begins the practice with exercises performed from the top to the middle of the page without lifting the pen, by the Whole Arm. It next gives exercises to develop the movement of the Forearm; and having established the hand and pen in the correct position, and acquired these Movements, it proceeds to combine them with the movement of the fingers." In keeping with earlier iterations of the Carstairian method, Woolley advises that "a tape or ribbon should be tied around the fingers and thumb, to prevent them from playing, till the Arm or Forearm movement is somewhat obtained." Such "exercises," Woolley insists, "are best calculated to develop the Movements which produce free, elegant, and rapid penmanship." Rare institutionally and in commerce. OCLC locates copies of this edition at only two institutions: the Newberry Library and the Winterthur Museum. We find no records of this edition at auction, nor is this edition recorded in Nash. OCLC 74495715. NASH, AMERICAN PENMANSHIP 296, 297, 298 (ref). Ewan Clayton, The Golden Thread: The Story of Writing (Berkeley, CA: Counterpoint, 2013), pp.216-17. Oblong 12mo, stitched. Original wrappers, front wrapper printed. Wood-engraved vignette of hand and pen to front wrapper and titlepage. Wrappers heavily tanned, stained, and soiled. Text tanned and lightly foxed and soiled. Light, scattered foxing and some offsetting to plates. Rear blanks dampstained and partially adhering to each and to rear wrapper. Good.
