Carney was a U.S. Navy admiral and had a distinguished career through World War Two; he helped to arrange and was present at the Japanese surrender ceremony aboard the U.S.S. Missouri; he served as commander-in-chief of NATO forces in Southern Europe (1951-53) and Chief of Naval Operations (1953-54). MacArthur was a famed New York socialite and philanthropist and devoted wife of controversial general Douglas MacArthur; she was at his side aboard a PT boat when he left the Philippines ahead of a Japanese siege; she often represented him at official functions. Carney signs boldly in black fineline and actually draws an arrow about one inch down to himself, standing alongside Admiral William F. "Bull" Halsey. On the same margin, at left directly above General Douglas MacArthur, his wife signs "Mrs Douglas MacArthur," also in black fineline.
