Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Used. The New Frontier Joke Book (1963) by Gene Wortsman ? Macfadden Books ISBN: None (launched before ISBNs and safety warnings on humour) Condition: Used (politically vintage, comedically dated, physically intact) Offered with a nostalgic wince by Crappy Old Books Step back into 1963 , when ?The New Frontier? meant sleek suits, big grins, Cold War nerves, and the iron-clad belief that absolutely everything ? including geopolitics ? could be improved with a one-liner. The New Frontier Joke Book by Gene Wortsman is a relic from that era, a paperback time capsule full of gags, zingers, and punchlines aimed at a world where newspapers still mattered and nobody had invented the phrase ?going viral.? Inside these gently yellowing pages you?ll find: Political jokes from a time when ?cutting edge? meant picking on the Space Race, Congress, and the price of everything, Wisecracks about presidents, politicians, and public life that assumed audiences got most of their news from actual print , And the kind of humour that falls somewhere between charmingly tame, bafflingly specific, and ?wow, that didn?t age quite how you expected, did it?? This is humour from the era of rotary phones, three TV channels, and the firm belief that a good joke at the right moment could defuse practically anything ? except, perhaps, your in-laws. This particular copy, rescued from the dusty frontiers of history by Crappy Old Books , is proudly Used . Which means: The cover may show scuffs, edge wear, and the faint suggestion it has languished in more than one box of ?old paperbacks we really should sort someday.? The spine may have creases that testify to at least one enthusiastic reader who had every intention of memorising a few lines for parties. The pages are likely tanned, slightly softened, and radiating that ?I?ve been around since Kennedy? sort of authority. No modern gloss, no updated editions, no ?revised for contemporary audiences? sticker. Just pure, unfiltered early-60s joke craftsmanship, complete with occasional groaners and ?you had to be there? moments. Perfect for: Comedy nerds who love seeing what people laughed at before sarcasm was industrialised, History buffs who appreciate political satire as a cultural artifact, Anyone who wants to stand up at a gathering and say, ?Here?s a joke from 1963,? and then watch the confusion unfold. Will all the jokes land in 2025? Absolutely not. Will some be unexpectedly sharp, oddly wholesome, or so dated they wrap back around to hilarious? Very possibly. That?s half the fun: reading through yesterday?s punchlines and realising how much ? and how little ? has changed. Adopt this Used copy of The New Frontier Joke Book , and let Gene Wortsman escort you to a world where the laugh track is in your head, the Cold War is background noise, and the hottest take is a pun about Capitol Hill. It?s history. It?s comedy. It?s a paperback attempting to be topical? sixty-plus years later. What?s not to find nervously amusing?

First edition (not stated per publisher's usual practice). viii, 284 pages. Hardcover: H 22.25cm x L 14.25cm. Lacks dust jacket. Yellow boards soiled; spine slightly darkened with ends bumped and heel additionally scuffed; spine's black stamping still fairly bright. Top edge toned and foxed; slight foxing and soiling to fore-edge and bottom edge; bottom fore-edge corners of pages 187-192 creased from past fold-ins; minor tear at upper fore-edge margin of pages 269-270; occasional faint foxing to some interior leaves which, overall, remain quite clean. Binding is firm. A very good- copy of a very uncommon book which is now regarded as a classic in the exposà genre. Birmingham, Alabama newspaper reporters Edwin Strickland and Gene Wortsman offer their investigations of notorious Phenix City, Alabama revealing local organized crime activities and the pervasive corruption of city and county government officials as well as detailing the brutality, greed, and racism of the many individuals involved in establishing Phenix City as a gambling and prostitution mecca for the soldiers stationed at nearby Fort Benning, Georgia. The impetus for their exposà was the June 18, 1954 assassination of Phenix City lawyer Albert Patterson who was shot and killed outside his law office shortly after winning the Democratic nomination for Alabama Attorney General on a law and order platform, a main tenet of which was reforming the corrupt and vice-ridden Chattahoochee River town. Patterson's death and subsequent public outcry led the state to impose martial law in Phenix City and the events and personas detailed in Strickland-Wortsman's book became the basis for the classic 1955 crime noir film "The Phenix City Story" directed by Phil Karlson and starring John McIntire, Richard Kiley and Kathryn Grant Crosby.
