Pages are intact overall but have significant dampstaining and some spots of rusting and discoloration (staples are rusted). Covers are intact overall but have significant dampstaining, rust marks, and some scratches on front. A Good copy. This pamphlet contains a very brief article by Allen Henry Wright. The main focus of his article is a biographical sketch of American humorist and author Seba Smith (1792-1868) and a satirical proclamation issued by Smith's caricature of Abraham Lincoln that was titled, "A. Linkin's Proclamashin." Smith was the editor of the Eastern Argus and the founding editor of the Portland Courier. As a humorist, Smith lampooned many politicians and notable figures of his day, including, but not limited to, Abraham Lincoln, Stephen A. Douglas, Henry Clay, and Washington Irving. Smith was married to Elizabeth Oakes Prince, a fellow writer. In his article, Wright briefly discusses the background of Seba Smith and a recurring character of his, Major Jack Downing, a witty yet blunt New Englander who speaks his mind on contemporary politics and other matters in a Yankee accent. Wright brings readers' attention to "A. Linkin's Proclamashin" which appeared in one of Smith's novels, Downing's "Book of Letters" formally titled, "Majer Jack Downing of the Downingville Millisha" (1864). Wright transcribes "A. Linkin's Proclamashin" in the article. In the proclamation, the fictionalized, satirical Lincoln refers to Downing as his friend and threatens varying degrees of punishment for opponents of Downing's book. Extract from "A. Linkin's Proclamashin": "Further more, if eny disloyal editer shall presume to say enything against this book, or advise eny person not to sell or circulate the same, or aid or abet them in so doing, he shall at once be arrested and his paper stopped. Further if any person in order to avoid the penalties mentioned above, shall borrow said book, he shall, if it be proved, be fined $1000 in gold. If there be no proof, he shall be sent to Fort Lafayette. Finally every person perchasing a copy of the Majer's Letters shall be exempt from the draft. All others are at once to be seized and sent to the front.".
