"During the last war the German authorities issued orders forbidding the photographing of executions, of the questioning of arrested persons, of round-ups and concentration camps. Depsite this, quite a number of photographs remained from that period. Who made these photographs? The Germans took pictures, in many cases the hangmen themselves, for their own collections. But Poles too - camp inmates - made snapshots, at the risk of their lives, as did accidental witnesses of Nazi crimes. The carefully hidden photographs of partisan units provide a picture of our fight for liberation.
