Comics featuring the original character "Private Breger" began running in The Saturday Evening Post in 1941. In 1942, Breger was assigned by the authorities at YANK magazine to adapt his character for publication in YANK for the soldiers during the war effort. "GI Joe", the twin of "Private Breger", was born in 1942 with the first issue of YANK. The name GI JOE is now a household name due to the fame of the series and the toy line that came a bit later.
