Paperback. Condizione: New. An edited collection of essays, interviews, and book reviews by M. Wynn Thomas. For more than half a century, M. Wynn Thomas has been Wales's foremost literary critic. His ground-breaking work - on subjects ranging from Welsh Puritanism to Walt Whitman, from religious Dissent to contemporary poetry - has opened up new vistas and literary correspondences for his readers. Thomas's writings combine a deep historical knowledge, a commitment to pluralism and a relationship to the literary text that is both sympathetic in approach and detailed in analysis.Made up of previously unpublished and uncollected essays, interviews, and reviews on Welsh and American writers, the writings in Transatlantic Vistas engage with some of the abiding interests of Thomas's career: Walt Whitman, Dylan Thomas, R. S. Thomas, and American authors such as Charles Bukowski, Rita Dove, Anne Stevenson and more. Including a foreword by Helen Vendler and essays by Daniel G. Williams and Kirsti Bohata, this volume celebrates M. Wynn Thomas's immense contribution as a literary and intellectual historian, critic, translator, lecturer, institution builder, editor, broadcaster and literary executor as he enters his eightieth year.…

Friends of Photography was a nonprofit organization started by Ansel Adams and others in 1967 to promote photography as a fine art. During its existence the organization held at least 330 photography exhibitions at its galleries in Carmel and San Francisco, California, and it published a lengthy series of monographs under the name Untitled. Untitled was published Friends of Photography from 1972 to 1994. A total of 58 numbered publications were issued, first as a small magazine format and later as a series of booklets and full-size books. Numbers 1-10 displayed the series name and issue number on the cover, but as the publications became more specialized each number was titled independently in addition to the series name. The smallest publication in the series was Number 1, with 10 pages, and the largest was Number 43, with 156 pages. Many of the publications were catalogs of exhibitions held at the Friends of Photography gallery in Carmel, California. The publication featured many famous photographers, including Ansel Adams, Ruth Bernhard, Harry Callahan, Roy DeCarava, Lee Friedlander, Mary Ellen Mark, Aaron Siskind, Paul Strand, Brett Weston, and Edward Weston. It also offered perspectives on newer photographic trends like plastic cameras and the influence of pop-art.The series of Untitled monographs includes: 1: Edward Weston, Dody W. On heavily aged and worn paper, with part of the blank last leaf of the second part torn away. The petition is by 'Freeholders and Ratepayers and others Residents [sic] in the parishes of Llanrhaiadr Mochnant Llanarmon Mynydd Mawr Pennant Hirnant and Llangynog being respectively interested in the Trade of the District and its general Welfare': 'We are of opinion that no Arguments that we can urge are required to convince you of the importance and desirability of having a Railway for the district in question. Wherefore we leave to the Deputation which wait upon you in this matter to explain all sundry matters and details in relation to the scheme we are now endeavouring to promote.' Many of the large number of signatures are arranged under the names of towns and townships (i.e. 'Cefncoch Township', 'LLanarmon Mynydd Mawr' and 'Hirnant'). Two lines, both later absorbed by Cambrian Railways, give a clue to the dating of the petition: the Oswestry and Newtown Railway, opened in 1855, and the Oswestry, Ellesmere and Whitchurch Railway, opened in 1861.…
