Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book traces the establishment of the 22 Swiss cantons after Napoleon's downfall in 1814. Starting with a brief overview of the long-standing struggles between local powers and the Swiss people, the author describes the influence of French politics on Switzerland's statehood and independence in the 18th century. The turmoil of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars devastated Switzerland and saw it briefly transformed into the Helvetic Republic. The author discusses how this upheaval led to Switzerland's realignment as the Swiss Confederation in 1815. With its cantons variously influenced by German, French and Italian powers, the Confederation faced challenges in reconciling competing interests. Nonetheless, the Swiss Confederation was established as a neutral entity, a status it maintains to this day. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
