Auch im Fremdsprachenunterricht spielen sie eine wesentliche Rolle: Eine Lektion bzw. der Unterricht kann mit Abbildungen beginnen, die den Lernenden die Möglichkeiten zum Sprechen und Schreiben bieten, das Hören oder Lesen von Text als Visualisierung begleiten, das Verständnis der Grammatik unterstützen und Informationen zur Landeskunde liefern. Laut Macaire und Hosch umfasst die Bildfunktion diejenigen Aspekte, die im Unterricht durch die Verwendung von Bildern ausgelöst werden können, beispielsweise die Fertigkeiten, die sie anregen, und die durch sie intendierte Unterstützung. Obwohl die allgemeinen Bildfunktionen in früheren Studien in unterschiedlichem Maß erläutert worden sind, sind ihre landeskundlichen Ausprägungen bisher kaum in den Deutsch-als-Fremdsprache(DaF)-Lehrwerken berücksichtigt worden. Daher liegt auf ihnen der Forschungsschwerpunkt dieses Beitrags.Diese Arbeit gliedert sich in drei Teile: Theorie, Analyse und Implikation. Die folgenden Fragestellungen sind die thematischen Schwerpunkte des theoretischen Teils in den Kapiteln 2, 3 und 4: Warum können Bilder im Fremdsprachenunterricht eingesetzt werden Weshalb ist es möglich, landeskundliches Lernen mittels Illustrationen durchzuführen Welches wesentliche Ziel soll im Rahmen des landeskundlichen Lernens durch sie erreicht werden Welche Bildtypen und -funktionen können in diesem Kontext unterschieden werden Der Kriterienkatalog zur Analyse wird danach vorgestellt. In Kapitel 5 folgt der Hauptteil dieser Arbeit: Dieser besteht in einer Analyse der beiden Lehrwerke Aspekte neu B1 plus und Studio [21] - Das Deutschbuch B1.2 auf Basis quantitativer und qualitativer Methoden und in der anschließenden Formulierung von Schlussfolgerungen, die aus dieser Gegenüberstellung abgeleitet werden können. Zum Abschluss werden in Kapitel 6 einige methodische Möglichkeiten und konkrete Beispiele aus den Lehrwerken vorgestellt.
