Before the Cultural Revolution, Aunt Gugu was a respected and beloved midwife in a small village. . . but after a disastrous love affair she throws herself into enforcing China's draconian family planning policy by any means necessary and becomes the embodiment of a reviled social policy. Condizione: VERY GOOD. First US printing. The first novel by one of China's most innovative writers, and his first book to appear in English, translated from the Chinese by Howard Goldblatt (with a note that, at the request of the author, this is based on the 1988 Tapei Hongfan Chinese edition which restored some of the deletions made in the 1987 Mainland Chinese edition). Mo Yan is a pseudonymic phrase meaning 'Don't speak.' Over more than 30 years, Mo Yan has been writing brutally vibrant stories about rural life in China that flout official Party ideology and celebrate individualism over conformity. He also flouts literary conformity, spiking his earthy realism with fantasy, hallucination and metafiction. The story in this book revolves around three generations of the Shandong family between 1923 and 1976 as the narrator tells the story of his family's struggles, first as distillery owners making sorghum wine and then as resistance fighters during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The first parts were the basis of the award-winning 1987 film of the same name. In 2012 Mo Yan was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. 359 pp. Very good in a near fine dust jacket (some light soiling to edges of textblock, minor edgewear to dj but overall a straight and clean copy, original price of 23.50 on flap of dj).…

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st English Language Edition, 1st printing ; viii, 540 pages ; 25 cm. OCLC 1428479805 and OCLC 38341911; ISBN: 9781611454277, 1611454271 ; LCCN 2007022843 Classification - LC PL2886.O1684 5413 2008 Classification - Dewey 895.1352 ; Mo Yan's new novel opens in hell on January 1, 1950, nearly two years after Mao Zedong's Land Reform Movement overturned the traditional order of rural China. For those two years, Lord Yama, king of the underworld, has submitted Ximen Nao, a landowner known for his uncommon kindness to all who worked his land, to every possible torture to make him admit the charges that led to his execution at the hands of newly empowered peasants. But even after being fried alive--the ultimate torture in hell--Ximen Nao continues to proclaim his innocence. Finally, in disgust, Lord Yama relents and allows him to return to earth, to his former landholdings in impoverished Shandong. But when he arrives there, he finds to his dismay that he has been reborn not as a man but as a donkey, and it is through this animal's eyes that he witnesses the fates of his former family, friends, rivals, and enemies. Subsequent reincarnations find him as an ox, a pig, a dog, a monkey, and finally a large-headed boy with an uncanny memory and a great gift for language. Through the earthy and hugely entertaining perspective of each of these characters--as well as of Mo Yan himself, who frequently interrupts to comment on the events--this brilliant novel narrates the past fifty years of China's tumultuous history. A tour de force of astounding sweep, filled with humor and extraordinary energy, Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out is bound to become a classic of contemporary literature. ; Mo Yan is the pseudonym of Guan Moye, who was born in Gaomi, Shandong Province, China on March 5, 1955. He became a teenager during the Cultural Revolution, leaving school to work first on a farm and then in a cottonseed oil factory. He started writing while he was serving in the People's Liberation Army. His first short story was published in 1981. His works include Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out, Red Sorghum, The Garlic Ballads, Big Breasts and Wide Hips, The Republic of Wine, and Sandalwood Death. He received the 2012 Nobel Prize in Literature. ; FINE/FINE. Book.…

It is an autobiographical short story by Mo Yan, the celebrated Chinese author who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature 2012. The Chinese characters are cut in an unique font used in the work "Caochuang Yunyu" dating from the Southern Song period (1127-79), of which there is only one known example. The font is well proportional, done in an elegant calligraphic style and easy to read. The lovely illustrations are from paper cuts done by the famous paper cutter Deng Hui, and have been transferred to woodblocks by the painter Cui Dezheng. …
