One of the questions that can be asked about a rug is "How old is it?". Carbon-14 is one way of providing an answer, although it is good only for older rugs and it provide a range, or ranges of ages. A second way is to look, particularly for older, classic carpets, is to look at depictions of rugs in paintings whose ages are known. This book follows the second way, by looking at Western European paintings from the 1540 to 1700 time period. There are detailed descriptions of designs in the field, borders; this is a scholarly and useful way in determining dates of classic carpets. Book.
