Die Versammelten waren bestrebt, die zwei Jahre zuvor in Leipzig auf den Weg gebrachten, und um deutsch-französischen Krieg verschobenen, Reformen der jüdischen Religionspraxis weiter voranzutreiben. Die sog. Neologen stießen dabei nicht auf begeisterte Zustimmung, sondern auch auf bissigen Spott und rigorose Ablehnung. Auch die Zahl der Teilnehmer war gegenüber Leipzig zurückgegangen, obwohl sich die Synode unter Leitung von Prof. Moritz Lazarus und Abraham Geiger, einem weiteren Teilnehmerkreis geöffnet hatte, der nun neben (auch bereits pensionierten) Lehrern, auch Laien und viele Journalisten zuließ. Letztere schenkten der Tagung eine große Aufmerksamkeit, die von New York bis Budapest reichte und landesweit ausführliche Tagesberichte in zahlreichen Blättern zur Folge hatten. Als Zuschauer nahmen auch eine Reihe katholischer Geistlicher teil, unter ihnen auch Joseph Franz Allioli, Verfasser von judenfeindlichen Schriften. Am Ende der Woche war die Zahl der Teilnehmer halbiert, die Stimmung trotz einigem Zweckoptimismus getrübt. Der Rabbiner der gastgebenden jüdischen Gemeinde wurde entlassen und wurde wie alle Teilnehmer in landesweiten Anzeigen öffentlichen gebannt.Der 1871 in Augsburg manifestierte Bruch zwischen neologischen und orthodoxen Juden besteht seitdem, bis heute, und wird mal mehr, mal weniger deutlich. Liberale und Fromme warfen sich auch schon gegenseitig vor, für den Antisemitismus, wie für den Holocaust, die Shoah (mit)verantwortlich zu sein. Auch heute stehen sich die jüdische Orthodoxie in Israel und die Reformgemeinden in den USA zunehmend fremd gegenüber, als Nachbarn ebenso wie als politische Akteure der Nahostpolitik. Damals wie heute ist es ein Kulturkampf.Das vorliegende Buch beschreibt die historischen Umstände und Entwicklungen ebenso wie die lokalen Schauplätze. Die Gastgeber und fast alle Teilnehmer der Synode konnten ermittelt werden und werden in kurzen Biographien vorgestellt. Schließlich gibt es viel Originalton in Redeauszügen und einen Überblick über die ungemein vielfältige Berichterstattung, die uns im Zeitalter meist vereinheitlichter Pressemitteilungen von Mediengruppen, neugierig werden lassen kann.Für die Augsburger Juden beschreibt die Synode eine kurze Phase weltweiter Aufmerksamkeit, die längst vergessen, durchaus Aufmerksamkeit und Beachtung verdient.…
