Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Beyond the Pleasure Principle, edited by Illari Laamanen. Featuring: John Divola, Armi Ratia, Estelle Hanania, Camille Henrot, Maija Luutonen, Aaron Schuster, Takeshi Murata, Tyler Adams, Luigi Russolo, Reba Maybury, Kohei Yoshiyuki, Nicole Howalt. Hardcover. 144 pages. With poster insert. Designer: Johanna Lundberg. Printer: Göteborgs Tryckeriet. "According to Sigmund Freud, the pleasure principle refers to the instinctual seeking of pleasure and avoiding pain in order to satisfy biological and psychological needs. Pleasure principle is oftentimes considered to be the strongest impulse guiding individual?s life. In his later writings, Sigmund Freud refers to the ?compulsion to repeat?, and declares that it might well be powerful enough to disregard the pleasure principle. This publication taps into this tension. The underlying motive isto create a scenario that deals as much with our complex relationship with nature and habitat as it does with transformation and letting go. An emphasis is put on the physical shared environment, but the tone is psychologically charged. Beyond the Pleasure Principle thrives from similar thematic framework as FCINY?s previous publication The Powers That Be that used the knowledge of the body and manifestations of physical energy as its point of departure. But in this case the physical and psychological energies and tensions can be considered to be intertwined, and analyzed through artistic gestures and three key themes: ritual, retrograde and repetition.Beyond the Pleasure Principle was produced on the occasion of two exhibitions, The Pleasure Principle at Sinne in Helsinki (June 4?July 31, 2016) and The Limits of Control at Station Independent Projects in New York City (August 13?September 4, 2016). The Pleasure Principle features works by John Divola, Camille Henrot, Maija Luutonen and Armi Ratia. The Limits of Control features works by Tyler Adams, Estelle Hanania, Nicolai Howalt, Jouko Lehtola, Takeshi Murata, Iiu Susiraja and Kohei Yoshiyuki. The exhibitions are curated by Ilari Laamanen and produced by the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York in collaboration with Sinne and Station Independent Projects.". …

Hardcover. Condizione: New. Kohei Yoshiyuki's night-time photographs, taken with infrared film and flash in Japan's Shinjuku, Yoyogi and Aoyama Parks during the 1970s, capture the illicit sexual encounters, both heterosexual and homosexual, that frequently occurred there under the cloak of darkness. The Park's images not only reveal hidden sexual exploits, but also uncover many spectators ardently lurking in the darkness, waiting to join in--and quickly raise issues of voyeurism and surveillance. In The Photobook: A History, Volume II, Martin Parr speaks to the societal relevance of this series, calling it, "A brilliant piece of social documentation, catching perfectly the loneliness, sadness and desperation that so often accompany sexual or human relationships in a big, hard metropolis like Tokyo."As exhibition organizer and editor Yossi Milo writes in his introduction, "With each viewing, I noticed something that had eluded me before: the photos' rigorous compositions They are provocative photographs, and unsettling as well: one is both chilled and thrilled by Yoshiyuki's boldness, by how close he crept to his unaware subjects, by the hours he spent late at night crouched in bushes and against trees, waiting for his perfect shot." Originally published as Document Kouen in Japan in 1980 and long out of print, the austere and acclaimed first edition of this book now commands prices near $1000 per copy. This new, updated edition, featuring an interview of the artist by colleague Nobuyoshi Araki and an essay by the noted photo critic Vince Aletti, contains all 60 works from the infamous Park series, reproduced from new scans in deluxe duotones. This work has not been seen by the public since the 1970s, and has been known only to cult collectors until now. Exhibited at Yossi Milo Gallery in New York in September of 2007, it was one of the most talked-about offerings of the season. …

Unpaginated (84 pp.), with 42 four-color plates, 15 black and white plates plus numerous additional color illustrations. 12 x 9-1/2 inches. New in publisher's shrink-wrap. From Nazraeli Press: "Martin Parr is the subject and guest-editor of Witness Number 3, the successful new series published by JGS, Inc. and distributed by Nazraeli Press. For his contribution to the series--in which one artist is selected for each volume to present [his] own work as well as work by other artists--Parr unleashes his scorching humor in the series 'Art World,' photographs made at art gallery and museum openings which reveal more about the art world than some may be comfortable with. This highly entertaining body of work is tempered by the somewhat gentler look at Sri Lanka, made in collaboration with Susie Parr, called 'Little England.' Together, Martin Parr's photographs and Susie Parr's text create a verbal and visual snapshot of Nuwara Eliya, a hill town in the heart of Sri Lanka. Parr rounds out his volume of Witness with a section called 'Three Ways to Make a Book,' which documents how photographers Rob Hornstra, Mark Neville, and Bart Sorgedrager were able to self-publish and distribute their own books; a presentation of portfolios by Japanese photographers Keizo Kitajama, Kohei Yoshiyuki, and Osamu Kanemura; and an interview with Parr conducted by Gerry Badger. …

"Yoshiyuki was a young commercial photographer in Tokyo in the early 1970s when he and a colleague walked through Chuo Park in Shinjuku one night. "I had my camera, but it was dark," he told the photographer Nobuyoshi Araki in a 1979 interview for a Japanese publication. Researching the technology in the era before infrared flash units, he found that Kodak made infrared flashbulbs. Yoshiyuki returned to the park, and to two others in Tokyo, through the '70s.
