First edition. *Robert Young (1796-1865) was sent to Australia to investigate the feasibility of uniting the Wesleyan Missions churches of Australia, New Zealand and Polynesia into a separate, self-supporting body. Arriving in Adelaide in May 1853, he travelled to Sydney via Melbourne, then on to New Zealand, Tonga and Fiji. After returning to Sydney, he spent Christmas Day on the Victorian gold diggings and travelled to Van Diemen's Land before returning to England in 1854. Tipped-in before the upper free endpaper of this copy is an early handwritten synopsis of Young's account of his travels.
