Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Book Club Edition. Alistair McLean's newest thriller explodes into action with what looks like a driver's miscalculation, a consequent crash, and a powerful racing car that is transformed instantly into a blazing funeral pyre. Johnny Harlow, number one winner… on the Grand Prix circuit, seems to be responsible for the "accident"-the latest in a series of disasters that has included the elimination by violence of Johnny's younger brother. The pit boss says he's doubtful that the troubles are being caused by explainable mechanical failures, the head of the team begins to believe that Johnny is losing his nerve, and jealous rivals start referring to Harlow as a has-been. But as the pressures and the tensions mount, a vicious pattern begins to emerge-and Johnny finds himself in a hair-raising race where the prize is survival and the penalty death. In this fast-paced novel of danger and suspense, one of today's master storytellers tells a tale that moves with the speed of racing motors toward a finish that only one can win. ccident"- the latest in a series of disasters that has included the elimination by violence of Johnny's younger brother. Hardback. Condizione: Very Good. Presumed First Edition. No stated date c1913. Presumed first edition. 132pp., 8 black and white portraits and a 4-page catalogue. The Open Brethren is an evangelical Christian movement emphasizing autonomy and open fellowship among believers. Part of the wider Plymouth Brethren Christian communit…y, it appeared in the early 19th century during a period of significant political and social turbulence across Britain and Ireland. The foundational goal was to establish a form of worship that allowed all true believers to partake in communion and study the Scriptures together, free from denominational divisions. Notable figures in its early development included John Nelson Darby, an Anglican clergyman, and other early leaders like Benjamin Wills Newton, George Müller, and Anthony Norris Groves. This book includes the following chapters: The Divine Authority of the Bible; The Gospel; The Principles of Open Brethren; The History of Open Brethren; The Worship Meeting; and Practical Problems. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling and decoration on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some light soiling to the boards. The spine is faded and the spine ends are bumped. The contents are tight and clean with some foxing to the title-page and last page of the catalogue at the end of the book. The endpapers are slightly browned and a name and address, dated 1913, has been written on the front free endpaper.

2pp., 12mo. Fair, on lightly-aged paper, with minor water staining and a couple of spike holes. An intriguing communication, beginning: 'I would not, if I were you, allow myself to be so worried.' Smirke feels that, as 'Mess: Saunders & Co have not been backward in representing themselves as Principals in the matter', and as the…y 'are as largely as - or more largely, interested' than Lloyd himself 'in obtaining a payment, they had better themselves address Sir Robert'. Lloyd's 'character is safe as the naturalist and as the member of the firm who contributed science; Let them exhibit themselves as men of business'. He ends by urging Lloyd not to allow himself 'to be made instrumental in dunning'.

1 p, 4to. On a bifolium, addressed on reverse of second leaf: 'Thursday at 11 O'Clock | Chas. Westmacott, Esqr., | 5, Clements Inn.' Fair, on creased and aged paper. Christie's note reads 'Mr Christie presents his Compts. to Mr. Westmacott. | with Mr. Westmacott's permission, the bearer of this Mr. Christie's warehouseman, will…remove the Pictures to King St. | King St, | Monday Feb. 14 | 1825.' Beneath this, in another hand, Recd 69 Pictures | [signed] John Biddle'. Above Biddle's receipt, in a third hand, are the word 'Received' and 'Recd 69 [i.e. Christie & Manson?]' in pencil. Westmacott was something of a connoisseur; his entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, by Manfred Draudt, describes how by 1831, through his editorship of the 'scandalous tory journal, the Age', he 'was prosperous and possessed a pretty cottage between Barnes and Richmond, its grounds adorned with sculptures'. See entry for Westmacott in DNB for dubious newspaper practices ("blackmailer").

2pp, 12mo. Bifolium, addressed on reverse of second leaf to 'Messs. Cadell & Davies'. In good condition, lightly aged, with thin strip of paper from mount adhering to one edge. An interesting document, providing an insight into the world of Georgian publishing. Without preamble or salutation, reads: 'This work, in point of style…, composition, & sentiment everything, in short, in which the writer's merit is concerned, is much below mediocrity. But whether its subject, & the side it takes in party, might not at the present moment gain it some public favour, is what I cannot answer. The author certainly conceives it to be a happy stroke at the times; & he has done all in his power by a full portion of political bigotry to make it suit its purpose. From the slight examination I have given it, it appears to contain nothing new in a historical view. | J. A.' From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Arnold, whose conversion to Roman Catholicism hindered his academic dvancement in England, was grandfather of the writer Aldous Huxley, and taught James Joyce at Dublin. At the time of writing he was running a private tutoring establishment at Oxford. He be…gins the letter by explaining that it has hardly been possible to reply to Hutchinson 'during term time [.] I had so much work on my hands'. He is returning 'Canon Bright's letter', and has 'not had time to look at the treatises on Perseverance and Predestination'. He has however 'read some way into the Epistle to Sixtus, and can find in it nothing like a denial of free will on human merit, though this last also he ascribes to an effect of the divine grace. Why some are saved and others lost, he cannot tell; he calls the whole subject a "difficillima quaestio" [.]'. He continues with a number of Latin quotations (including one from a letter to Abbot Valentine of Adrumetum), noting that 'St Austin' was 'misunderstood in his own day as he often is in ours'. He continues: 'With such passages as these to enlighten one as to the Saint's real meaning, may one not well feel reluctant, unless a whole string of predestinarian (in the bad sense) passages were adduced from his writings, to admit that he fell into, or countenanced, error?' He ends with a discussion of 'the good works of the heathen'. Cf. Bernard Bergonzi, A Victorian Wanderer The Life of Thomas Arnold the Younger. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2003.
