Aggiungi al carrello4to, pp. [ii], iv, [vi], 412; a very attractive copy in contemporary calf, gilt, spine gilt, red morocco label (just a trifle rubbed). First edition. A substantial collection of hymns and occasional verse by the elder brother of John Wesley, who is identified on the title-page as 'Master of Blundell's School at Tiverton, Devon;…some time student at Christ-Church, Oxford; and near twenty years usher in Westminster-School'. Samuel Wesley (1690/91-1739) was a high-church Tory, and a friend and correspondent of Alexander Pope, who helped gather subscriptions for this volume. Among the satirical and facetious poems are 'The Pig, a Tale', 'On Mr. Hobbes', 'The Dog, a Miltonick fragment', 'Snuff, a satyr', and 'Neck or Nothing: a consolatory letter from Mr. Dunton to Mr. Curll, on his being toss'd in a blanket'. DNB comments: 'Besides humorous pieces, this contains several hymns of great beauty; five of them are included in the present Wesleyan hymn-book'. Foxon p. 885.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Quarto, contemporary Cambridge panelled calf neatly rebacked in polished roan, small spot at foot of first three gatherings, neat library stamp at foot of page 51, quite decent. Wesley's family was clearly talented and well connected in literary matters. His father, Samuel, was a re…spected literary figure and member of the Calves Head Club; among his uncles were John Dunton and Daniel Defoe. And, though his bent was classical and his poetry tends towards odes, imitations, translations and paraphrases, Wesley displays a far from ordinary, even lyric touch with many exquisitely tender verses. He also was one of the earliest poets to devote a portion of his efforts towards Miltonic imitations, of which there are several in this work. The poems in all are of particular merit, and a few of the hymns still are used in his brothers John and Charles Wesley's hymnal. And , no less than Alexander Pope helped obtain the subscribers for this work. First edition, uncommon.

Aggiungi al carrello8vo, pp. 16, including engraved frontispiece as the first leaf; in modern boards. First and only edition: a poem commemorating a humiliating occurrence in the life of the rogue bookseller Edmund Curll. On 26 August 1716, without the author's permission, Curll had published a Latin funeral eulogy for Dr Robert South by John Barbe…r, a young gentleman at Westminster School. Receiving an invitation to visit the school, Curll went and was seized by the schoolboys, tossed in a blanket, paddled on his bare bottom, and made to beg forgiveness of young Barber, on his knees in Dean's Yard. These scenes are illustrated in a frontispiece, and the poem written as if from another colourful bookseller, John Dunton describes them: Oh! how th'unlucky Urchins laugh'd, To think they'd maul'd Thee fore and aft: 'Tis such a terrible Affront! Why Pope will write an Epick on't! Bernard will chuckle at thy Moan, And all the Booksellers in Town, From Tonson down to Boddington, Fleet-street and Temple-bar around, The Strand and Holborn, this shall sound. (p. 16) The poem is actually by Samuel Wesley (older brother of John and Charles), who was head usher at the school. Foxon W343: like other copies, this has the official duty stamp of one penny (charged for pamphlets of one sheet or less), on the frontispiece.

Aggiungi al carrello8vo in fours, pp. viii, 21, [2] advertisements; disbound. 'Third edition'. In resurrecting this poem the Dublin bookseller George Faulkner used the text of the London first edition of 1723; presumably he was unaware of the revised version published the following year, which had also appeared in the collected edition of Wesley's…poems printed in 1736. Faulkner did, however, remove 'Hesiod' Cooke's name at the end of the preface, and he silently introduced a number of alterations in the text, from an unnamed source. Aggiungi al carrello8vo in fours, pp. xiii, [i], 32; piece torn from one blank margin (just touching text), and one other leaf repaired without loss; in recent half calf, black morocco label. Second edition, with additions and alterations: first printed the year before. Wesley had a certain facility for light verse, and this poem on a well-travelle…d theme proved popular. A newspaper advertisement for this second edition, in July, 1724, describes it as 'just publish'd. To which is added two stanza's, and the whole corrected by the author; with a preface of his own writing'. In fact the poem has been expanded from 46 to 50 stanzas, and three other stanzas have been substantially rewritten. The preface in the first edition was signed by Thomas Cooke, to whom the poem itself was therefore often ascribed; in this edition a quite different preface is not signed, and there are commendatory poems by both Cooke and Christopher Pitt. Bound in at the back is the half-title of an unrelated neo-Latin poem by Nicholas Rowe. Foxon W334. Provenance. Early signature on the title-page of P. Carter.

Aggiungi al carrello4to, pp. 20; pale waterstain in the lower half, else a good copy, disbound. First edition: a heartfelt poem written by the younger Samuel Wesley (1691-1739), elder brother of John, to honour his late father-in-law John Berry, the vicar of Walton, in Norfolk, whose daughter Ursula he had married in about 1715. Berry is not named…in the poem, but his identity is confirmed by a note in a copy belonging to the antiquary Maurice Johnson (1688-1755), sold at Sotheby's in 1970 Maurice Johnson had been a close friend of Wesley's father. Foxon W345. These verses were printed by William Bowyer, whose ledgers reveal that the print run was only 300 copies, which perhaps explains why it is so rare today. ESTC records five copies only (Cambridge UL, Sion College and Leeds in the UK; and Toronto and New-York Historical Society in North America).

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition of one of the rare early anatomical works of one of the most important German anatomists, later also known for his introduction of vaccinations against smallpox soon after Jenner's 1798 publications on the subject, his work on fossils and sunspots, and his 1809 invention of an electrical telegraph. The present work… discusses the anatomy of the human brain and spinal cord, carrying on from the author's doctoral thesis a decade earlier on the neural organization of the brain. It is dedicated to the Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal, Elector and Archbishop of Mainz, who had called Soemmerring to Mainz as a professor four years before. A second edition appeared in 1792.Soemmerring (1755-1830), son of a doctor of the same name, was an anatomist, doctor and wide-ranging researcher. He wrote his doctoral thesis in 1778 and was named professor of anatomy and physiology at Mainz in 1784. He was knighted in 1808.The pomegranate stamped on the title-page could easily be mistaken a printed ornament, but one can see it has been separately stamped and that the impression carried through to the following leaf (though not now aligned, suggesting it was made when the sheets had already been folded and gathered but not yet bound). It may be an owner's mark or simply a decoration. In very good condition. The backstrip is slightly damaged, but the binding remains good.l August Hirsch, Biogr. Lexikon . Aerzte (1887), pp. 453-455; cf. VD18 (1792 ed.). Near contemporary boards covered with orange paste-paper, sewn on 3 cords with a hollow back, gold-tooled spine label, orange and brown sprinkled edges. With a decorated rule on the title page and a few decorations built up from cast fleurons. Set in frasktur types with Latin words in italic and non-German book titles in roman. The present copy has a pomegranate stamped on the title-page after printing and folding but before binding. Pages: "XIV" [= XVI], 115, [1] pp.
