Als Objekt einer ueberraschenden Schatzsuche wurde der Codex Hersfeldensis seit seiner Entdeckung von Humanisten, Literaten, Paepsten, Geheimagenten, Eingeweihten und bedeutenden italienischen und europaeischen Dynastien begehrt und umkaempft, darunter die Medici von Florenz, bis hin zum Zweiten Weltkrieg, als Adolf Hitler und Heinrich Himmler versuchten, in seinen Besitz zu gelangen, da sie ihn in einem mystischen und esoterischen Sinne als ein wahres, fuer die arische Rasse heiliges "Machtobjekt" betrachteten.Im Jahr 1455 wurde er im Auftrag von Papst Nikolaus V. (dem grossen Humanisten Tommaso Parentucelli, einem ehemaligen Mitglied der florentinischen Platonischen Akademie) durch Enoch d'Ascoli wiedergewonnen und nach Rom gebracht. Enoch war eine eigentuemliche und raetselhafte Figur, ein Beschaffer klassischer Texte und "verlorener" Werke im Dienste des Vatikans. Nach dem Tod des Papstes und dem darauffolgenden Ableben Enochs selbst wurde der Kodex in drei Teile zerlegt, und seine Spuren verloren sich. Der Teil, der Tacitus' Germania enthielt und dazu bestimmt war, unter dem Namen Codex Esinate in die Geschichte einzugehen, wurde 1902 in Jesi in der Bibliothek des Grafen Aurelio Guglielmi-Balleani wiederentdeckt. Angesichts der Entwicklung der Ereignisse in Europa und des Aufkommens des Dritten Reiches in Deutschland liess die Nachricht von der Entdeckung des aeltesten Manuskripts der Germania die Vertreter jener kulturellen und intellektuellen Kreise nicht gleichgueltig, die um die Nationalsozialistische Partei kreisten und der Verherrlichung des Germantums sowie der vermeintlichen Reinheit der "arischen" Rasse gewidmet waren. Nachdem Mussolini Hitler den Kodex im Jahr 1937 versprochen aveva, wurde er nach dem 8. September 1943 zum Objekt der Begierde von Heinrich Himmler, der ein SS-Bataillon nach Jesi entsandte, mit dem Befehl, ihn zu beschlagnahmen.
