Entgegen landläufiger Meinung ist La Paloma kein Volkslied oder Traditional im herkömmlichen Sinn, es hat mit Sebastián de Yradier (* Alava, Spanien, 1809-1865) einen Komponisten. Vermutlich wurde das Lied um 1863 im Teatro Nacional de Mexico zum ersten Mal gesungen.
