Through this International Symposium, the objective was to provide a forum for scholars, policy makers and concerned organizations to discuss issues related to herbal medicine in a holistic manner, with special attention to various United Nations and other international studies and recommendations. The recommendations and Plan of Action of the Convention on Biological Diversity that was adopted in Rio de Janeiro, in 1990, and the International Plan of Action of Indigenous People that was adopted in Geneva in 1992 served as a foundation for this International Symposium.
