Title page in burgundy and black lettering. Picasso illustrated this essay of Diderot's with four portraits of the great thinker, whose mind "anticipated and epitomized moral, psy…chological, and social opportunities and stresses attending the assimilation of science into culture" (DSB 4: 84). The portraits are reproduced in lithograph print form by Mourlot Frères, Paris. One of 430 copies printed on vélin pur Lafuma, of which this is No. 369 (of a general edition of 530 copies). Glassine sunned, with minor and sporadic chipping along edges. Upper corners bumped, thus slightly affecting pages throughout. Text in French. Glassine in overall fair to good-, dust-jacket, wrappers and interior in good+ to very good condition.
