Gorbatschow und seine Mitautoren zitieren aus bislang unveröffentlichten Gesprächen, die der neugewählte Generalsekretär der KPdSU mit westlichen Spitzenpolitikern führte. Diese ersten Schritte auf dem Weg zu einem »Neuen Denken« in der Sowjetunion waren das Vorspiel zu den weltpolitischen Umwälzungen in den Folgejahren. Damals, in den achtziger Jahren, führten die Angst vor den unkalkulierbaren Risiken der atomaren Bedrohung sowie die finanziellen Lasten des ungebremsten Wettrüstens schließlich zur Beendigung des »Kalten Krieges«. Heute zwingen neue globale Herausforderungen zu einem grundlegenden weltpolitischen Umdenken. Diese Folgerung ziehen die drei außenpolitisch erfahrenen russischen Autoren aus ihrer aus- führlichen Analyse der aktuellen Situation. Autoren Michail Sergejewitsch Gorbatschow wurde 1931 geboren. Nach Jurastudium und Promotion absolvierte er ein Zweitstudium am Agrarinstitut in Stawropol. 1952 trat er der KPdSU bei. Seit 1980 Mitglied im Politbüro, wurde er 1985 als Tschernenkos Nachfolger Generalsekretär des Zentralkomitees der KPdSU; 1990 übernahm er das Amt des Staatspräsidenten. Im Dezember 1991 trat er von diesem Amt zurück und gründete in Moskau die »International Foun- dation for Socio-Economic and Political Studies«. Vadim Valentinowitsch Sagladin, 1927 geboren, arbeitete nach seinem Geschichtsstudium und der Habilitation, zunächst als Hochschullehrer, später bei verschiedenen Zeitschriften. Als Mitglied des Zentralkomitees der KPdSU und Parlamentsabgeordneter war er 1964-1988 stellvertretender Leiter der Internationalen Abteilung des ZK. 1988 wurde er Berater Michail Gorbatschows, seit 1992 arbeitet er für die Gorbatschow-Stiftung. Er ist Mitglied der Russischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Anatoli Sergejewitsch Tschernjajew wurde 1921 geboren. Er studierte Geschichte und schlug nach seiner Promotion ebenfalls zunächst die Hochschullaufbahn ein. Nach mehrjähriger Lehrtätigkeit an der Universität Moskau arbeitete er 1961-1985 als Referent und stellvertretender Leiter der Internationalen Abteilung des ZK der KPdSU. Er war Mitglied des ZK sowie Parlamentsabgeordneter.
