Over the course of the tale, which twists and turns in ways one couldn't possibly imagine, Tanaka reveals his desire to kill 100 people, with a telling as dispassionate regarding its victims as it is fiery regarding its murderer's mindset.". "The Caterpillar" had always been a controversial story, however. Rampo's wife, after reading it, declared it to be "filthy" and when Rampo showed the story to several geisha friends, they all told him they couldn't eat after finishing it. But left-wing, anti-war activists claimed Rampo as their hero after the story's publication, even though Rampo vehemently denied that he had written the story with any particular ideology in mind. Instead, composer Bozzone opts for sounds which echo the tonal shifts in Robbins' tale. At the outset, the music is that of a pipe organ, reflecting the opening line, "Jacques Courbé was a romanticist." Its reverential tones are precisely those of the vest-pocket protagonist in his admiration of bareback rider Jeanne Marie from the moment he first lays eyes upon her. De Quincey's words speak simultaneously of scholarship and worship, both things which have been long-noted for beginning with the tones of a ringing bell. How appropriate, then, that Harvey is reading of the start of life - the very ultimate of all beginnings - as well. - However, "Levana and Our Ladies of Sorrow" is not about duality, but about the tripartite relationship of worship in the Furies, the Graces, and once even the Muses. To these, De Quincey adds and Harvey reads of a new triad: "Our Ladies of Sorrow."
