Lewinsky was born in Podberez'ye (Polish: Podbrodzie; modern Lithuanian: Paberze), on the outskirts of Vilna, though during his childhood his family moved to Gilwan in the Kovno region. He received an intensive Talmudic education under his father's supervision, but at the same time was given the opportunity to read Haskalah literature in Hebrew. Lewinsky was especially impressed with the writings of Mosheh Leib Lilienblum and with the latter's struggle against the Lithuanian rabbinate then taking place in the nearby town of Wilkomir (Ukmerge). As an adolescent, Lewinsky spent short periods of time studying in Wilkomir and Kovno, and from 1874 he taught in Vilna and in other towns in the provinces of Minsk, Chernigov, and Ekaterinoslav. In 1881, Lewinsky began to study medicine in Kharkov and was drawn to the nascent Jewish nationalist movement. Spurred on by pogroms in southern Russia, he abandoned his studies, joined Hoveve Tsiyon (Lovers of Zion) circles, allied himself to the BILU student movement, and even went to Eretz Israel, where he stayed for several months in 1882. Upon returning to Russia, he continued his intense involvement in Hibat Tsiyon, establishing Zionist associations in various southern towns. Working as a grain merchant, he coordinated his public activities with his business travel schedule. After his business collapsed in 1896, he was appointed manager of the southern and western Russian branches of the Carmel Company, marketing wine produced in Eretz Israel. That same year he made Odessa his permanent home, and it was not long before he became one of the mainstays of the elite circle of Hebrew writers and Zionist activists there. For the rest of his life he was a driving force behind the literary, publishing, educational, charitable, and propaganda enterprises in Odessa. Lewinsky's first articles were published in 1875 in Ha-Levanon, but he himself belittled the value of these early writings and considered his literary career to have begun in 1889 with the appearance in Ha-Melits of his polemic articles against the attempts of Sholem Aleichem and Yehoshu'a Ravnitski to cultivate Yiddish literature. Initially viewing their activities as a threat to the future of Hebrew literature, over time Lewinsky changed his mind to the extent that he himself contributed feuilletons to the Yiddish press, and even was a founder of the Odessa-based Yiddish daily Gut morgen. In the early 1890s, he published travel memoirs in the local press that, because of their vitality and humorous tones, proved very popular with readers. Nonetheless, his best work of that period was Masa' le-Erets Yisra'el bi-shenat tat (2040) (Voyage to the Land of Israel in the Year 5800 [2040]; 1892), a utopian tale of a visit to an utterly perfect, future Jewish state. Lewinsky's crowning achievement in his writing was the Mahashavot u-ma'asim (Thoughts and Deeds) series of feuilletons, which he published in Ha-Shiloah from its very first issue in 1896. In 50 installments, Lewinsky elevated the art of the Hebrew feuilleton to new heights. He developed the character of the popular narrator, a firmly rooted Jewish persona called Rabi Karov (Rabbi Close Relative), who discusses issues of the day with quick-witted humor and talks to readers in an unadorned and intimate manner. Embedded in these monologues is Lewinsky's Hebrew nationalist weltanschauung, which does not owe allegiance to any specific Zionist denomination but rather encapsulates the fundamentals common to practical, political, and spiritual Zionism. Lewinsky's generosity and warm countenance became legendary, and after he died suddenly in October 1910, his funeral attracted tens of thousands of people and countless warm words of eulogy, including those written in a special memorial booklet published by the Ha-Shiloah journal. Avner Holzman, partially based on Tidhar's encyclopedia: "Zalman Epstein (1860 Luban, Minsk District, Russia -1936), was an essayist and Zionist activist. During his adolescence he studied at the Volozhin yeshiva. At age 16, he moved with his family to Odessa, where he acquired a secular education but was not admitted to the university. Though he enjoyed a very fruitful literary career, he drew his main source of income from his lifelong work as a bookkeeper and merchant. Epstein published his first essays, on Jewish nationalism, in 1879 in the Hebrew journals Ha-Kol, Ha-Melits, Ha-Tsefirah, and Ha-Boker or. His literary career began in earnest in 1882 with a series of essays on Hibat Tsiyon (Love of Zion) that appeared in Ha-Melits. In 1889, he was among the founders of the secret Zionist society Bene Mosheh (The Sons of Moses), headed by Ahad Ha-Am, and between 1890 and 1900 he served as the general secretary of the Odessa Hoveve Tsiyon (Lovers of Zion) society. Aside from his long-term association with Ha-Melits and Ha-Tsefirah, Epstein was also a regular contributor to the monthly Ha-Shiloah and to other Hebrew journals. He also published in Yiddish and Russian, and in 1904 moved to Saint Petersburg to edit the Yiddish daily, Der tog. Epstein was also very active in Hebrew education and in projects to rejuvenate the Hebrew language. In 1911, he helped establish the first Hebrew-language kindergarten and elementary school in Russia. Located in Kalinkowicz in the Minsk region, the school functioned for two years. In 1925, Epstein escaped Soviet Russia and moved to Palestine. After failing in his attempts to earn a living in the clerical and commercial fields, he turned to writing, thanks to the efforts of Hayim Nahman Bialik. Epstein was commissioned, for example, to write a monograph on Mosheh Leib Lilienblum (1935). At the same time, he contributed regularly to the Ha-Arets newspaper. A small selection of his articles have been published in two volumes, the first, Kitve Zalman Epshtayn (The Writings of Zalman Epstein; 1905) during his lifetime and the second, with the same title, two years after his death. Epstein accurately described his own writing as reflecting "the mental disposition of the Hebrew man of the intermediate generation, with one foot placed firmly inside the 'Pale' and the other foot already marching in the outside world." His essays of the 1880s and 1890s do indeed reflect the complex emotions of his contemporaries and the tensions of that period of historical and literary transition. The articles contain fond reminiscences of the Torah-traditional world along with calls to abandon religious texts for the sake of contact with nature. He also wrote essays on great Russian writers (including Tolstoy and Turgenev); showed deep appreciation for the creators of Hebrew literature from the Haskalah period and beyond (Yehudah Leib Gordon, Kalman Schulman, Mendele Moykher-Sforim); created portraits of personalities and institutions that were in the very heart of traditional Jewish society (the Gaon of Vilna; Volozhin yeshiva); and provided perceptive insights into the new Hebrew literature of the early twentieth century, which he defended from the criticisms of Ahad Ha-Am. What most impressed Epstein's contemporaries, however, were the autobiographical chapters that he published beginning in 1885 under the title Mi-Sefer ha-zikhronot li-Shelomoh ha-Elkoshi (Memoirs of Solomon Alkushi).
