After studying Schliemann's book on his excavations in Troy, published in November 1880, Boetticher was convinced that Schliemann had… misinterpreted the excavation results and had not found a settlement, but a fire-necropolis. In strongly-worded articles he criticized Schliemann, his colleague Wilhelm Dorpfeld as well as Rudolf Virchow. The dispute finally culminated during the so-called Erste Troiakonferenz in December 1889. The monograph examines the history of this conflict, which, since Boetticher published his ideas at least until 1911, continued even after Schliemann's death in December 1890. In addition, the volume offers a biography of Ernst Boetticher, about whom very little was available until now. German description: Im Dezember 1883 begannen die Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Ernst Boetticher und Heinrich Schliemann um die Interpretation der Forschungen Schliemanns in Troja. Boetticher war nach dem Studium des jungsten, im November 1880 erschienenen Berichts uber die Grabungen in Troja davon uberzeugt, dass Schliemann die Grabungsergebnisse falsch interpretiert und keine Siedlung, sondern eine Feuernekropole ausgegraben hatte. In scharf formulierten Artikeln wandte er sich gegen Schliemann, seinen Mitarbeiter Wilhelm Dorpfeld und auch gegen Rudolf Virchow. Die Meinungsverschiedenheiten kulminierten schliesslich wahrend der sogenannten Ersten Trojakonferenz im Dezember 1889. Since LH III C wa…s an illiterate culture, it is only possible to define its successive periods, i.e. their historical sequence, by means of the stylistic stages in the development of its pottery. The second workshop of the series, "LH III C Chronology and Synchronisms II: LH III C Middle" held in 2004, focussed on the middle phase(s) of LH III C, during which Mycenaean Greece reached a final stage of cultural and economic achievements. At this workshop, leading ceramics specialists and excavators attempted to define the stages of LH III C pottery development in various regions of Mycenaean Greece and to incorporate them into an overall chronological system. In addition to the lectures, the conference volume also contains a discussion of general issues and theoretical questions. Die Untersuchungen sind jedoch nicht ausschließlich der Grabungsarchäologie gewidmet: Ebenso wird beleuchtet, wie sich Institutionen wie die Antikensammlung des Kunsthistorischen Museums in Wien, das Bundesdenkmalamt und die Prähistorische Kommission der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften entwickelt und verändert haben.
