Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. Cheek, Richard (photography) (illustratore). New condition navy cloth boards with gold front cover and spine lettering contained in a fine condition color photographic dust jacket. Includes Introduction; Acknowledgments and Subject Index. Profusely illustrated with color photographs. "Old Richmond Today is the celebration of a communal heritage. The city belongs to all - citizen and visitor alike. To live in Richmond is a privilege; to visit is a pleasure. Richard Cheek's Pictorial survey vividly confirms these observations. The book is less a guidebook than a testament to a century of achievements in historic preservation, collected for the first time in full color in a single volume. The city's major landmarks and museums are shown along with other efforts, not only those of organizations and institutions, but also those of generations of Richmonders who have successively lived, worked and played in the city's buildings, neighborhoods and parks. This book is neither a history nor a promotional tract. It is an attempt to draw together a visual record of buildings, artifacts and sites that have come down to us from the past - an amazingly rich legacy. The Richmond that exists today was created by thousands of individuals who built homes, founded businesses, planted flowers and placed monuments and tombstones for more than two centuries. Much is owed to those who have gone before; likewise, much should be expected of those who assume stewardship in the 21st century." - excerpt from the Introduction.

Carneal, a graduate of Princeton University and the University of Virginia School of Law, began his law career in Richmond in 1963. After twenty-two years of private practice, Carneal left the firm of Cabell, Moncure & Carneal, Inc., in 1985 when he was appointed to the position of Richmond city attorney. In 1989, he joined Owens & Minor, Inc., a medical supply distribution firm, where he serves as senor vice president, general counsel, and corporate secretary. Carneal's interest in the history of the Fan District began many years ago when he discovered that a long-vacated byway called the Scuffletown Road ran through the middle of a vacant lot he had purchased on Park Avenue. Curiosity about the road and about the location and nature of Scuffletown led to research at the local courthouses and in archives that then expanded into a leisurely exploration into the history of the entire Fan District. Carneal has served as president of the Fan District Association, trustee of Historic Richmond Foundation, and director of the Historic Monument Avenue and Fan District Foundation, the Maymont Foundation, and the Massey Cancer Center. He presently is a member of the Commission of Architectural Review of the city of Richmond. Carneal is married to Ann Wood Carneal and has two grown children, Jack, a writer, and Ann Barron, a teacher. Drew and Ann Carneal live on Monument Avenue." - from the inner front jacket flap.
