Prima edizione
Trade Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Clark, Blair - Photography (illustratore). First Edition. 61 Pages. Attractive very high quality binding withdust-jacket like flaps. Laid in is the the brochure for the Hands of a Craftsman exhibition October 1993 to April 1994. German-born printmaker Gustave Baumann is best known for his color woodcut prints of scenes of his adopted New Mexico and of rural landscapes in Brown County, Indiana. Less well known is the extraordinary body of wooden marionettes that he carved beginning in 1931. In all he crafted sixty-five marionettes, wrote most of the plays that featured them and showcased his often-comic sensibility, and delighted audiences for decades with performances of his little people. Baumann studied woodcarving in Munich in 1905, returning to the United States with a deepened appreciation for the puppetry tradition of his native Germany. In 1923 he met actress Jane Devereux Henderson, and their subsequent marriage provided the artist with talent enough to mount a family theater effort, at first for the entertainment of their growing family but eventually for audiences beyond their ken. The marionettes traveled and performed regionally but in 1959 the final curtain fell. Their world was dark for nearly twenty years until Baumann's widow donated most of the marionettes and their equipment to the Museum of New Mexico's Museum of Fine Arts in 1979. The puppets then were catalogued, conserved, and properly stored in the Museum's vault. In 1993, as part of the public programming around an exhibition of Baumann's prints, the puppets were brought back to perform. The public response was overwhelming, resulting in the Museum's decision to host annual marionette performances. Each December during the holidays, Baumann's marionettes once again enchant audiences of all ages with the story of Juan, the woodcutter, and his loyal friend, Miguelito, the burro. In this timeless tale, the evil Dona Mala and her apprentices, Warts and Freckles, conspire to prevent Christmas from coming. In the end, Christmas arrives and amity prevails. The marionettes of Gustave Baumann are fragile, beautiful objects. Ellen Zieselman, curator of education at the Museum of Fine Arts, has been fortunate to share the art of New Mexico with audiences of all ages for more than a decade. She believes strongly that all art communicates to the viewer but that the Baumann marionettes fairly shout. She began this project prepared to tell their story but found that the marionettes had something else in mind. They insisted on telling their story themselves, thus resulting in an original presentation worthy of puppetry theater. Look for these books about Gustave Baumann: Gustave Baumann: Nearer to Art, by David Acton and Martin F. Krause with Madeline Carol Yurtseven. Also Hand of a Craftsman: The Woodcut Technique of Gustave Baumann, by David Acton. Contetns: Foreword, Preface, A Small Untroubled World, The Santa Fe Puppet Wranglers, Acknowledgments, and Afterword.
