Diese interdisziplinäre Arbeit geht den musikbezogenen Denkformen der rabbinischen Tradition anhand zweier exemplarischer Fallstudien auf den Grund und stützt sich methodisch auf ethnologische, literatur- und sprachwissenschaftliche Ansätze. Alle Quellentexte werden in Übersetzungen wiedergegeben. Der erste Teil beschreibt den gesungenen Vortrag der Tora in der Synagoge als kulturelles Schlüsselritual. Mit Hilfe historischer Quellen sowie anhand von Beispielen aus der eigenen Feldforschung zeigt die Autorin auf, welche Funktion dieser Gesangspraxis zukommt und wie diese als System mit einer eigenen Notationsweise funktioniert. In diesem Zusammenhang wird auch das komplexe Zusammenspiel von mündlicher und schriftlicher Überlieferung näher beleuchtet. Im zweiten Teil werden die Spuren des biblischen Meeresliedes (Exodus 15) in der frühjüdischen Literatur, in Talmud und Midrasch verfolgt.
