Paperback. Condizione: New. Explores the rich diversity of narratives, rituals, and participants connected with one of the most important celebrations for Hindus in South Asia and in the diaspora. The autumnal Navaratri festival-also called Durga Puja, Dassehra, or Dasain-is the most important Hindu festival in South Asia and whe…rever Hindus settle. A nine-night-long celebration in honor of the goddess Durga, it ends on the tenth day with a celebration called "the victorious tenth" (vijayadasami). The rituals that take place in domestic, royal, and public spaces are closely connected with one's station in life and dependent on social status, economic class, caste, and gender issues. Exploring different aspects of the festival as celebrated in diverse regions of South Asia and in the South Asian diaspora, this book addresses the following common questions: What does this festival do? What does it achieve, and how? Why and in what way does it sometimes fail? How do mass communication and social media increase participation in and contribute to the changing nature of the festival? The contributors address these questions from multiple perspectives and discuss issues of agency, authority, ritual efficacy, change, appropriation, and adaptation. Because of the festival's reach beyond its diverse celebrations in South Asia, its influence can be seen in the rituals and dances in many parts of Western Europe and North America.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Oversized hardcover, xi + 535 pages, weight over 1kg, NOT ex-library. Mild external handling wear only. Interior is crisp, clean and bright throughout with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Issued without a dust jacket. -- The book explores South Asian do…cumentary cultures from the pre-modern to the modern period. It provides a multidisciplinary look at how documents - ranging from legal deeds to administrative letters - were produced, archived, and used in social and political life. Core Themes and Structure - The volume is organized into five thematic sections that analyze the "social life" of documents: - Diplomatics [focuses on the formal features and typology of documents, including the formation of an "Indic" diplomatic tradition and the role of digital methods in studying these records]; - Documentary Practice [examines how records like the Newari chatas challenge Western chronological historiography and how historical records documented religious sponsorships, such as the renovation of the Svayambhucaitya]; - Legal Practice [this is the largest section, covering topics like debt laws in 17th-century Mithila and the enforcement of Nepal's first legal code, the Muluki Ain of 1854]; - Administration [investigates the role of documents in state bureaucracy, including revenue farming in Kathmandu and the use of British and Gorkhali records by local elites]; - State and Religion [explores the intersection of administrative affairs and religious institutions, such as the role of ascetics in central administration]. The work marks a shift toward studying documents not just as passive sources of information, but as active agents that embodied norms and constituted institutions. It heavily utilizes materials from the National Archives of Nepal, making many previously inaccessible or unstudied records available for scholarly analysis.

Broadly speaking, two sets of rituals are relevant to a discussion of initiations in Hindu and Buddhist traditions: initiatory rituals as part of the life-cycle which are observed in many social groups and are compulsory depending on gender or age, and those, more optional in character, tha…t allow admittance to a certain religious group or practice. The contributors to this volume are from different academic disciplines and treat examples of both kinds of rituals in various religious settings. Of special interest in this collection of essays are interrelationships among initiations and their relations to other kinds of rituals. The papers are devoted to the study of minute details and point to the dynamics of initiations. The transfer of ritual elements accompanied by readjustments to new contexts as the modification of procedures or the reassignment of meanings is one of the recurring traits. Other aspects addressed by the authors include the relation of script (ritual handbooks) to performance or various forces of change (e.g. the economics of ritual, gender-related variations, modernization and democratization).
