Der beste Ausdruck dieses Lebensgefühls waren sicherlich die Rockmusik und die Lyrik - insbesondere die frühe Lyrik von Zvonko Karanovic. Die urbane Abwendung von jeglicher Provinzialität wurde vollzogen, programmatisch und praktisch, in der Lyrik und im Lebensstil.Danach kam die Ernüchterung - im zerfallenden Land organisierten sich politisch und kulturell die Mehrheiten um die rückwärtsgewandten Utopien - die große Zukunft lag für sie in der ruhmreichen, ethnisch definierten Vergangenheit. Zvonko Karanovic lehnte es ab, in diesem Massenchor mitzusingen, und folgte seiner eigenen Stimme. So blieb seine Lyrik im Jahrzehnt der Zerfallkriege notgedrungen marginalisiert. Er blieb ein Weltbürger aus Nis, der seine Seelenverwandtschaft mit Leuten wie Jack Kerouac oder Allen Ginsberg, Ralf Dieter Brinkmann oder Luis Buñuel, David Lynch oder Leonard Cohen offen zeigt.Das Publikum liebte diese Lyrik, die jüngeren, urbanen Leser erkannten sie in allen Ländern, wo man serbisch versteht, auch in Kroatien, als eigene verdrängte Stimme jenseits des Massengeschmacks.Die Randstellung war nicht angenehm, aber sie erleichterte es dem Lyriker, die Haltung der Unangepasstheit in seinen Versen zu bewahren.In seine Tonlage hat sich zwar zunehmend der Blues eingeschlichen, denn auch die neuen Demokraten haben das geschundene Land nicht in die goldene Ära geführt, doch die Vitalität und die Konsequenz seiner Lyrik blieb konstant: nach wie vor postmodern angehaucht, kommunikativ und weltoffen.Zunehmendes Interesse an seiner Lyrik in New York, London oder Kiew zeigt, dass die Welt einen serbischen Weltbürger allmählich nach Hause holt.
