Hersey's intentions are patently allegorical and some of the names decipher easily enough: Pliny Forward is the learned and progressive young man of the town, Roswell Coit is a lascivious lout, Dorcas Thrall a patient spinster. Hersey makes much of a small town's strange juxtapositions of centuries and customs, the fact that television sets and candlesticks are used in the same house, gasoline stations and whipping posts exist side by side, and the very same conversation contains the latest neologisms and such quaint survivals as "raise high tantrabogus," "betwattled after," "I swan," and just about every rural expression you ever heard. Selectman Avered is busy marshaling the townsfolk for a drive against a teeming colony of woodchucks, groundhogs, or marmots that have become audacious and threaten, at least in the heated imagination of the Selectman, to infiltrate the town and dispossess its inhabitants. Things turn out catastrophically for the elder Avered as the townspeople catch him removing a cinder from a woman's eye, draw the wrong conclusion, and decide to give him an old-fashioned public whipping for the imaginary misdeed, and also for having actually committed adultery and been caught at it a long time ago, for being too smart and too impractical, for having led them on a wild marmot chase, and because they require a scapegoat for all their rancor, guilt, misgivings, and sins.Hersey again moves carefully about on the neatly outlined beachheads of big political issues and humanitarian sentiments and has brought forth a well-constructed, skillfully executed, and pleasing book.

Burgess, an English novelist, composer, and critic, whose novels are characterized by verbal inventiveness and social satire, is considered one of the most influential novelists of the 20th Century. For Anthony Burgess, it was never enough to excel in only one sphere. He was a great writer, but an intrinsic merit of the man was that he wanted more, much more than that. He also wanted to succeed as a composer, a journalist, a critic, a translator, a biographer, a scholar, a teacher, a professor. What a steep task for one mere human life span. Some of this he managed to achieve before he ran out of time, some of his goals are still in the processes of being achieved now, including establishing his standing as a poet and a composer. That Burgess, recipient of countless awards, such as the Commandeur des Arts et Lettres and the Critic of the Year Award, should have won a Booker, Pulitzer or Nobel, or all three, is increasingly clear to literary critics, but even without those, his name will survive, not only through our generation, but into the coming generations as well.

Outside the hall in 1920s London where Timothy Harcombe works nightly with his father, a sign reads, "Clement Harcombe. Medium and Healer." But it is Timothy who seems to have the greater power. Periodically falling into dreamlike states, he enters into "English music"--here signifying all the great accomplishments of English culture--where he encounters various literary figures, becomes part of a Gainsborough painting, and is instructed in music by William Byrd. Fearful of his son's gift, the father ships him off to his maternal grandparents in the country. But ultimately Timothy rejoins his father--for "everyone belongs somewhere"--and discovers the true extent of his miraculous powers. Ackroyd suggests that we all belong to culture. His book is both charming and ambitious. The transitions between Timothy's real and imagined worlds are seamless, and Ackroyd's lovely prose is a pleasure. This work is intriguing and should appeal especially to those who appreciate the art Ackroyd celebrates.
