Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: No Jacket as Issued. BP6 - A paperback book SIGNED by author with "Best wishes" written on the title page in very good condition that has some bumped corners, curled top corners opposite the spine, light discoloration and shelf wear. 9.25"x6.25", 96 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. Growing up as a child in Singapore and Malaya in the 1960s was an idyllic experience. Thousands of children of naval personnel will have the same fond memories of their time spent there as I have. Who could forget the constant hot weather or the strange smells that you only seemed to find in the Far East? Who could forget the heavy monsoon rains, chit-chats or Tiger Balm Gardens? Other memories will include the markets, hawkers, amahs and snake charmers. Shopping was an experience in itself. Bartering was a way of life and anyone who lived there at the time would remember CK Tang's and Change Alley. Only going to school till 1.00 p.m. because of the heat and spending the rest of the day on boat trips or at the beach was wonderful, as were all the fantastic toys that were available at the time. I hope this book will remind people of those far off sunny days of their childhood and I hope it brings back many happy memories. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Signed by Author. …

Soft cover. Condizione: Good. 1st Paperback Edition. Paperback. Mary Tudor. Slight watermark to first couple of pages. The author exlores the twisting path whereby Princess Mary, daughter of a rejected wife, Catherine of Aragon, and a capricious father Henry VIII - endured disfavour, personal crisis and house arrest to emerge as Queen of England with huge popular support. The high promise of her reign contrasts with the personal tragedies and disappointments that followed, from the Smithfield burngins and the loss of Calais to her doomed, loveless marraige to Philip of Spain. Loade's probing yet sympathetic account reveals an intriguing personality, impelled by deep-set beliefs and principles yet uncertain how to behave in a 'man's' role/ Illustrated. 295 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Paperback Printing. Paperback. The Kings and Queens of Scotland. Very slight foxing to end inside covers and edge. The story of the rulers of Scotland's constituent states and then of the united kingdom of Scots from Kenneth MacAlpin onwards is complex and often violent. It is full of rapid reversals of fortune, brilliant and incompetent leadership, family strife, and triumph and tragedy closely intertwined. The obscure earlier history is often as fascinating as the better-known stories of the Bruce and Queen Mary, though less familiar. This saga of a thousand years is a tribute to the qualities of Scotland's rulers. Illustrated. 320 pp.…

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Reprint. Paperback. What the Railways Did For Us. The Making of Modern Britain. It is hard from a distance of nearly two centuries, to imagine the impact the coming of the railways must have had at the start of the nineteenth century. Their physical impact was dramatic engough - great mechanical horses, breathing fire and smoke abd drawing impossibly heavy trains at unimaginable speeds, across a landscape transformed by the embankments and cuttings, viaducts and tunnels their passage demanded. However, they would also transform the way war was conducted and peace was maintained; prove to be one of the drivers of the dramatic industrial growth of the nineteenth century; create opportunities for many to become enormously wealthy, but impoverish for many more, who invested unwisely; cause the state to think again about the policy of laissez-faire that was its default position; transform our leisure; radically re-shape our towns and cities and change our very notions of time and how we measured it. In this book the author looks at the changes wrought in the British Isles during the first century of the railway age and answers the question, what did the railway do for us? Illustrated. 223 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Paperback Edition. Paperback. London Colour Archive. This fascinating compilation of early London photographs takes us on a tour of one of the world's greatest cities, but rather than picturing the historic scenes dating back to the 1850s in the traditional sepia and bglack and white monochrome, new realism is given here by reproducing the images in full colour. We can therefore explore not only some of London's renowned landmarks but also less frequently pictured aspects of the capital including street characters, local markets, shops, theatres and early cinema, and the historic River Thamjes by whose banks London begahn as a Roman town nearly 2000 years ago. There is also a look at some of the local neighbou7rhoods where Londoners live, and at the city's transport as horse and steam traction gives way to electricity and thye internal combustion engine. Great exhibitions and royal events are featured as are wartime photographs recalling the inferno of the blitz in the 1940s, while a further sequence recalls London's old docklands. Principally sourced from ancient albums and private collections, this book unites a wealth of rare and unpublished images to reveal that the London of a century and more ago was as colourful and vibrant a city as it is in the present day. Illustrated throughout. 120 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. First Edition. Softcover First EditionThe East London bus scene in 1969 was one of contrast. This was London s industrial heartland with the River Thames bankside dominated by docks, power stations and heavy industry, including the massive Ford Motor Works at Dagenham. Inland, dense inner city housing gave way to terraces and vast council estates as you travelled eastwards. The red buses of London Transport held a monopoly relieved only by the Green Line coach routes also run by London Transport. However, in the outer reaches of the Greater London Council area there was a remarkable overlap as London Transport s red buses delved deep into Essex while the Eastern National buses from Essex ran deep into London Transport territory.Twenty years later, much had changed. The docks and power stations had closed and the London Docklands Development Corporation was transforming the old docks into Docklands. Changes in the bus industry saw London Transport split up in 1970, then from 1985 deregulation led to routes being tendered out and new operators taking them over. Softcover Excellent condition Today Hastings and its neighbouring St Leonards On Sea are a busy seaside town, popular with holiday makers and day trippers wanting to soak up its coastal heritage and historical charm. Known to many for the famous battle of 1066, which was not actually fought at Hastings, the town has so much more to offer and in this book author Tina Brown reveals many little known stories about Hastings, from the fact that Hastings was the birthplace of television invented by John Logie Baird to the unique Piece of Cheese House in the old quarter built as a bet in 1871, as well as exploring its secret places, The Mortuary House with its cold chamber and coffin hatches, the tunnels still lying under much of the town today connected with the smuggling past, and the Stag Inn which was frequented by the smugglers.Secret Hastings explores the less well-known episodes and characters in the history of the town through the centuries. With tales of remarkable characters, unusual events and tucked away historical buildings, it will appeal to all those with an interest in the history of this East Sussex town.…

Card Cover. Condizione: Near Fine. First Edition. Softcover A look at the dark side of life, Victorian-style, when nothing was quite as it seemed and a public execution could be an entertaining family day out. Murderers, poachers, thieves, pickpockets and vagabonds all went about their business with impunity. Crime took place on the streets, on public transport, in homes, pubs, prisons, asylums, workhouses and brothels - it was all part of everyday life. Naturally the punishments awarded varied considerably, depending upon the crimes committed. Murderers and thieves - particularly horse thieves - could expect the rope, though others could hope for a reprieve. Such a remission would automatically add them to list of convicts to be deported to the penal colonies in Australia. Alternatively, convicts might expect to spend time in gaol or a House of Correction, with hard labour and floggings often thrown in for good measure. This collection of real life crimes vividly recreates the events surrounding them, offering an insight not only into criminal law but also into the social history attached to crime as society evolved and adapted to meet changing industries and class structures. A must have book for any arm chair detective and anyone interested in the social mores of the day. unread.…

Card Cover. Condizione: Near Fine. First Edition. Softcover Wood Green,9781445617114 6 miles north of the City of London, is now part of the lively borough of Haringey. In 1619, when part of the parish of Tottenham, it was a mere hamlet of houses on the periphery of Wood Green Common, which later became the iconic Alexandra Palace and its park. However, it was close to a highway from London to Enfield and beyond, and it was as a result of this that its commercial growth began, starting with a smithy in 1770. Coaching inns followed in the late eighteenth century, and by the nineteenth century the High Road was full of shopping parades. Residential development was accelerated by the arrival of the railway in 1859, and in 1888 it became a borough in its own right, with a population of 23,000. As Wood Green continues to thrive today, its history is reawakened by this beautiful collection of images.unread.…

Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. 1st Paperback Edition. Softcover The small Sussex town of Battle owes its very name and creation to the famous Battle of Hastings which took place here in 1066; the most decisive and important battle to have ever taken place in England. Following Duke William of Normandy's crowning victory, Battle prospered through the Middle Ages as a market town, a tradition which continues to this day. Always dominating the landscape of the town has been the magnificent Abbey which William created to celebrate his victory.Through a collection of largely Edwardian photographs, this book tells the story of Battle and the beautiful, historic surrounding villages of Catsfield, Westfield, Sedlescombe, and Crowhurst; each village steeped in its own rich history. Around Battle Through Time is essential reading for anyone who knows and loves this little unread.…

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. First Thus. Paperback. A Child's War. The German Occupation of Guernsey as Seen Through Young Eyes. Signed by the Author to title page. The Channel Islands were the only British territory to be occupied during the Second Wiorld War. Islanders were immediately imprisoned amongst thousands of unsmiling enemy troops, all armjed with daggers, bayonets, guns and rifles. Our world was suddenly turned upside down. So, what was everyday life like for a child and her family! This story is a tribute to my mothers and to all mothers who had the worry and frustrations of bringing up children during the five years of German Occupation on the island of Guernsey. I appreciate being allowed to bring up daughters without the traumatic experiences my parents had to face and I feel very pri8viliged and fortunate to live in freedom on such a beautiful island. Illustrated. 96 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. Cloth & Boards. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. First Edition. Hardcover Life in 1950s London After the trauma of the Blitz and wartime restrictions, London embraced the arrival of a new decade.
