Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: None, As Issued. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. Unpaginated. Published in 2009. Exhibition Catalog. Retrospective collection of Polaroid photographs. One of Barbara Crane's finest achievements. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited first print ru…n as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Francesca Richer: Regular-sized volume format. Ribbed brown cloth boards with Polaroid reproduction pasted on the recessed center and gilt titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Barbara Crane. Text by Barbara Hitchcock. Printed on thick, glossy stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark retrospective exhibition held at the Stephen Daiter Gallery Chicago in November and December, 2009. Presents "Private Views: Polaroids by Barbara Crane". All taken in Chicago between 1980 and 1984, at various annual summer festivals that continue to be celebrated to this day. Since each photograph is one-of-a-kind, the whole lot can only be viewed through this volume, where they are reproduced at actual size. Barbara Crane has stated that her lifelong goal as a photographer has been to "attempt to eradicate previous habits of seeing and thinking, to keep searching for what is visually new while always hoping that a fusion of form and content will take place" (Barbara Crane). Her Polaroids "offer an intense, sun-drenched, sweat-glistening example of one such fusion, in which the social document is combined with extreme close-ups, tight cropping, and mixed lighting for maximum impact. Her technique also serves to bring out the sheen of flesh photographed at close quarters under a hot summer sun. The effect is mesmerizing, creating a palpable sensuality from image to image, an incredible document not of a particular event or personality but of something more intangible: The public expression of euphoria" (Barbara Hitchcock). Crane is identified with the Institute of Design and its Bauhaus aesthetics. In these Polaroids, Barbara Crane deploys the same rigor, simplicity, and functionality to create a genuinely sensual, even erotic, experience, the fulfillment in its own distinctive way of her visionary aims. Indefatigable until the end, Barbara Crane died on August 7, 2019 at the age of 91. An absolute "must-have" title for Barbara Crane collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Barbara Crane. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare signed copy thus. 105 color plates. One of the finest American photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER BARBARA CRANE TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 1597110965. Signed by Author.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - In Photography After Frank, former New York Times writer and picture editor Philip Gefter narrates the tale of contemporary photography, beginning at the pivotal moment when Robert Frank commenced his seminal works of the 1950s. Along the way, he connects the dots of photography's evolutio…n into what it is today, forging links between its episodes to reveal unsuspected leaps. Gefter takes Frank's The Americans as a decisive challenge to photographic objectivity, with its grainy, off-hand-seeming spontaneity and its documentation of life beyond the picket fence. Thus viewed, The Americans provides Gefter with a bridge to the phenomenon of the staged document and Postmodernism's further challenge to image fidelity. Other areas of discussion include photojournalism, the recent diversity of portraiture styles, the influence of private and corporate collections on curatorial decisions and how the market shapes art making. Throughout Photography After Frank, Gefter deftly demonstrates Frank's legacy in the work of dozens of important individual artists who followed in his wake, from Lee Friedlander and Nan Goldin to Stephen Shore and Ryan McGinley. The book includes texts written exclusively for this publication as well as essays drawn from Gefter's critical writings, reviews and even obituaries. Photography After Frank offers a page-turning approach to a subject that will appeal to students and art world aficionados alike.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - It takes an artist with the astute eye of Holland's Jacqueline Hassink to capture the actual oddness of the use of female models to sell cars. Hassink has already been acclaimed for books and exhibitions addressing issues of power and social relations, and 'Car Girls' is a supreme instance of the…se explorations--a body of work that has taken more than five years to complete, photographing car shows in cities on three different continents. As Hassink affirms, she has used these sites to reflect on the differing cultural values with regard to their ideal images of beauty and women. The series captures the moments during the women's performances when they become more like 'dolls or tools than individuals.' In an issue of 'Aperture' magazine, Francine Prose described Hassink's achievement perfectly, praising the work for its ability to 'make us rethink the association between auto and eros as if it had never occurred to us, and to see it newly in all its sheer outrageous strangeness.' 'Car Girls' takes a subversively fun but conceptually smart approach to issues of gender, power and commodification. This luxuriously produced publication with a foldout poster cover is designed by Irma Boom and is limited to an edition of 1,500 copies.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - In this luxuriously produced limited edition, Paolo Ventura invents an imaginative series of photographs depicting scenes from the memory banks of an old circus performer as he looks back on his life. What the performer revisits are not moments of great drama, but rather fleetingly recalled glimp…ses of an everyday life, 'images that he had thought to have never seen, quick moments he unknowingly observed as he raised his eyes to the clock hung at the corner of the block.' Using his own childhood memories, beautiful miniature figures and sophisticated sets, Ventura re-envisions a simpler time in 1930s Italy, but his darker vision--with its shadowy backdrops and retreating figures--reminds us that this is not quite Eden. Skillfully crafted and hauntingly evocative, the work is filled with the sweet melancholy of an era, but remains timeless in its ability to resonate with contemporary audiences. This monograph contains an engaging sequence of images, ephemera from Ventura's working process and a selection of the artful drawings he creates as guides to his elaborate sets. Born in Cuba in 1968, raised in Italy and now a resident of New York City, Paolo Ventura studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan in the early 1990s. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at Forma International Center for Photography, Milan, the Rencontres de la Photographie, Arles, France and Maison Europénne de la Photographie, Paris. Ventura is represented by Hasted Hunt, New York.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - During the 1960s and '70s in Japan, the photobook-through a combination of excellence in design, printing, and materials-overtook prints as a popular mode of artistic dissemination. This process has expanded to an extent where any discussion of Japanese photography now has to include the book wor…k. Today, the most famous works-such as Nobuyoshi Araki's Sentimental Journey and Eikoh Hosoe's Man and Woman-continue to inspire artists internationally. Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and '70s presents forty definitive publications from the era, piecing together an otherwise invisible history that has played out in tandem with photography as a medium. Included are some of the most influential works along with forgotten gems, placed within a larger historical and sociological context. Each book, beautifully reproduced through numerous spreads, is accompanied by an in-depth explanatory text and sidebars highlighting important editors, designers, themes, and periodicals. Lavishly produced, this unique publication is an ode to the distinct character and influence of the Japanese photobook.

Many of Ruff s works in the series focus on idyllic, seemingly untouched landscapes, and conversely, scenes of war, and nature disturbed by human manipulation. Taken together, these masterworks create an encyclopedic compendium of contemporary visual culture that also actively engages the history of landscape painting. Jpegs is the first monograph dedicated exclusively to the publication of Ruff s remarkable series."; PROVENANCE: purchased directly from Aperture Book Store in N.Y. City; book is tight and clean; a little rubbing and a lot of invisible scratches to the dustjacket, otherwise boards and interior plates in EXCELLENT COND. Signed by Author(s).

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - In 1963, controversial author Yukio Mishima and photographer Eikoh Hosoe put the finishing touches on their masterful collaboration Barakei (Killed by Roses), part photographic performance, part surreal portrait of Mishima as both iconoclast and self-mythologist. The original edition, designed by… Kohei Sugiura, famously established the touchstone for two subsequent editions in 1971 and 1985.
