paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Portfolio of loose plates. Softcover. Good binding and cover. Small tears to folder. Clean, unmarked pages. [1] page, [61] leaves of plates : all illustrations ; 29 x 36 cm. ,br> The Sackler set of sixty-one Vedute (views 1-63 with 13 and 57 missing) illustrates Piranesi's stylistic development between the 1740's and the early 1760's. Piranesi sold the Vedute either individually or in sets. From arround 1761 on, he issued the sets with plates arranged in an order given in his Catalogo, a single etched plate containing a list of his works. That order is followed in the illustrations in this folder with a number in small square brackets given in the caption on the reverse of the illustrations. But in sets of the Vedute printed in the 1760's, as this one was, the earlier plates are not quite in their original form. All the prsent impressions are prints in brown and sepia inks richly applied--colors which Piranesi favored in the early 1760's. In their earliest states, the earliest plates would have been less heavily printed, more usually in a black ink. Moreover, most of these early plates had been reworked in the 1760's changing that pictorial image, generally adding shadows and strengthening them to make the contrasts of light and dark more pronounced."--from 1st plate with text.
