Softcover. Quarto. Softcover. Illustrated wraps. 204 pages : illustrations (some color) ; 28 cm. The importance of the written word in Chinese art - as inscription, decoration or calligraphy with brush and ink - is one of the most discussed topics in the history of Chinese art. Laminated wrappers, 8vo, 22 cm, xxiii, 192 pp, ills. From the blurb - "D. G. Rossetti conceived the idea of a literary journal shortly after the first exhibition by members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1849. Four issues appeared in 1850 and were reprinted in facsimile in 1901 with an explanatory introduction by W. M. Ros…setti, Dante Gabriel's younger brother who wrote: 'I am quite aware that some of the articles in 'The Germ' are far from good, and some others, though good on essentials, are to a certain extent juvenile; but juvenility is anything but uninteresting when it is that of such men as Coventry Patmore and Dante Rossetti.'. 'The Germ' contains short stories, essays and literary reviews, but most particularly poetry, such as Rossetti's The Blessed Demozel, Christina Rossetti's Dreamland, Beil Scott's Morning Sleep and Patmore's The Seasons, thus emphasising the claim that 'an attempt will be made, both intrinsically and by review, to claim for Poetry that place to which its present development in the literature of this country so emphatically entitles it'." Wrappers a trifle creased, edges slightly duststained and spotted, otherwise Good.

Hardcover. Black cloth boards with silver spine lettering, glossy black dust jacket with white lettering, color illustrated, xiii, 319 pp, profusely illustrated in color. "Manju netsuke have never been the subject of a book on netsuke. Many books ignore them completely and it is hoped that this catalogue will throw light on the…differences between the manju and other better-known types of netsuke. Dr. Barnett was one of a handful of collectors of one particular type of netsuke, the manju. These were not widely appreciated until about ten years ago when interest began to increase and the exquisite workmanship and design of this group of carvers was noticed as an art in its own right and one which presents the artist with a challenge completely different from the more popular katabori netsuke, carved in the round. Dr. Barnett continued to collect until just before her death in 2000, by which time she had acquired some of the finest pieces to be sold over 30 years which will be presented in this book. Manju netsuke have played a small part in the many publications on netsuke, but there has never been a catalogue entirely devoted to the subject. The book aims to provide a description of each object and to explain the tales they illustrate and the sources of these tales, from literature and printed picture books. The range of subjects is wide and includes religious images, scenes from festivals, the theatre, historical incidents, folktales, classical literature and themes from nature."--Publisher's description. VG+/VG (ligh curling to dust jacket).

1st edition. Fine cloth copy in an equally fine dust-wrapper. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered. Literally as new. Physical description; 160 p.: ill. (chiefly col.), ports.; 28 cm. Notes; Text by Richard Calvocoressi, Martin Harrison, and Francis Warner. Colls. Catal…ogue of an exhibition held at Ashmolean Museum (Oxford), 12 Sept. 2013 - 5 Jan. 2014 [extended to 19th Jan.]. Includes bibliographical references. Summary; In their different mediums, Henry Moore (1898-1986) and Francis Bacon (1909-1992) created unforgettable images of the human figure. The distinctive visual languages that each artist developed over more than half a century were marked by a growing simplicity and monumentality of form. Their perspective differed: Moore clung to a belief in humanism, while Bacon espoused a post-humanist, nihilistic view of the world. In expressing their visions of humanity, the two artists had very different approaches: Bacon working from the outside in, disintegrating and dissolving form; Moore from the inside out, pushing anatomical structure to the surface. If Bacon's images suggest flux, chance, and the arbitrariness of existence, Moore's sculptures have been interpreted as universal symbols of strength and endurance. Bacon and Moore first exhibited together in a group exhibition at the Lefevre Gallery in London in which Bacon showed his Three Studies for Figures, at the Base of a Crucifixion (1944), propelling him into the limelight for the first time. Moore showed two sculptures from the 1930s and fourteen wartime drawings, some of which anticipate the theme (though not the savage imagery) of Bacon's triptych. Exhibiting together in a commercial gallery was repeated twice in the 1960s, when Moore and Bacon were both represented by Marlborough Fine Art. These joint shows, extensively reviewed in the press, gave critics a chance to compare the artists' radical approaches to the human figure, which were seen as complementary rather than conflicting. Fifty years later, this publication once again brings their work into direct comparison. Subjects; Bacon, Francis 1909-1992 - Exhibitions. Moore, Henry 1898-1986 - Exhibitions.
