This book illustrates the full range of Camille Pissarro's work from the 1850's through to one of his last pictures, painted from his window in Le Havre in 1903 - Quai au Havre. A close friend of Cezanne and Monet, he was the only member of the group to exhibit in all eight Impressionist exhibitions between 1874-86. His eldest son, Lucien (1863-1944), settled in England in 1890 and became a founder member of the Camden Town Group. Also a wood engraver, he founded the Eragny Press named after his parents' village in France. This book also touches on the work of Lucien's younger brothers - Georges, Felix, Ludovic-Rudolphe and Paul-Emile, and of Lucien's daughter Orovida (1893-1968) who developed her own individual style as an etcher and painter, and, with her mother, presented Lucien's collection of family works to the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. From his childhood visits to his uncle at Sunningwell, Turner was fascinated by Oxford: no other place in England so consistently engaged his attention over so long a period, from the beginning of his career until the late 1830s. Indeed, his first documented drawing, made at the age of 12, was a copy of one of Rooker's designs for the Oxford Almanack, and it was followed by a substantial group of early drawings and sketches remarkable for the astonishingly rapid technical progress they display. His most important early commission was for 10 watercolours to be engraved as headpieces for the Oxford Almanack, the first of which was published in 1799. This book brings together all his views of the city and discusses the circumstances surrounding the genesis of these works. It is one of the most important resources of its kind in the country, containing much material that is not available in either the British Museum or the National Portrait Gallery. It was originally presented to the University of Oxford in 1865 and has been added to ever since. Approximately half the collection consists of British portraits - royalty, nobility and distinguished members of the clergy, literary or military figures, scientists, lawyers and artists. Examples include Sir Francis Drake, Oliver Cromwell, John Wesley and Charles Dickens. There is an equal number of portraits of international figures, ranging from Queen Christine of Sweden (reigned 1632-54) to Simon Bolivar, Garibaldi and Jenny Lind in the 19th century. This catalogue traces a course from Neo-Classical and Romantic artists like David, Ingres, Gericault and Delacroix, through Impressionists and Post-Impressionists like Degas, Monet and Seurat, to the ground-breaking experiments of Picasso and Braque; but it also shows that there was no straight line leading from tradition to the shock of abstraction. The story is altogether more interesting as academic artists and members of the avant-garde exchanged ideas and as rivalries developed between different schools and powerful characters.
