Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. This book illustrates the full range of Camille Pissarro's work from the 1850's through to one of his last pictures, painted from his window in Le Havre in 1903 - Quai au Havre. A close friend of Cezanne and Monet, he was the only member of the group to exhibit in all eight Impressionist exhibitions between 1874-86. His eldest son, Lucien (1863-1944), settled in England in 1890 and became a founder member of the Camden Town Group. Also a wood engraver, he founded the Eragny Press named after his parents' village in France. This book also touches on the work of Lucien's younger brothers - Georges, Felix, Ludovic-Rudolphe and Paul-Emile, and of Lucien's daughter Orovida (1893-1968) who developed her own individual style as an etcher and painter, and, with her mother, presented Lucien's collection of family works to the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Aus dem Nachlass von Dr. Jutta Börker-Klähn (1942-2019), Privatdozentin für Altorientalistik an den Universitäten von Berlin, Würzburg und Hamburg. - Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt. - In The Ancient Near East, illustrated from the richly varied collections of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, Roger Moorey seeks answers to these and other questions and at the same time outlines the cultural history of the region in general. As the creators of the alphabet in which this is written, of the earliest farming communities and of the oldest towns known to man, the peoples of the Near East in antiquity first pioneered crafts and skills that remain fundamental to modern ways of life. Their achievements, for long eclipsed by those of the Greeks who borrowed from them, continue to be illuminated by archaeology. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. Excavations in the late 1970s in the modern village of Vergina revealed a series of spectacular royal tombs; one identified as belonging to Philip II and the others to members of Alexander the Great's immediate family. Remarkably preserved with much of their exceptionally rich contents intact, these burials take us on a journey back from the time of Alexander (d.323 BC) through classical and archaic times to the early years of the first millennium BC. The finds do not simply tell us of the wealth and social status of the deceased: they also reveal much of the ritual surrounding death. Apart from some items from this burial, exhibited in New York in 2006, and some spectacular items from the tomb of Philip, none of these new finds have been seen by the public in or outside Greece. The extraordinary discoveries will be shown for the first time at the Ashmolean Museum. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. Michelangelo and Raphael, in spite of their strongly contrasting characters, have many points of contact as draughtsmen. Looking to Leonardo, who had pioneered new techniques, they transformed the practice and status of drawing, using it to achieve the same expressive and affecting ends as painting or sculpture. Both artists raised technical mastery to new heights. In this selection from the Ashmolean Museum's famous collection, Catherine Whistler examines the technique and purpose of these drawings, and what they tell us about the artists' interests, development and working methods. Each picture is accompanied by a detailed commentary, and the whole volume provides an illuminating introduction to Renaissance drawing through the works of two of its greatest masters. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. From his childhood visits to his uncle at Sunningwell, Turner was fascinated by Oxford: no other place in England so consistently engaged his attention over so long a period, from the beginning of his career until the late 1830s. Indeed, his first documented drawing, made at the age of 12, was a copy of one of Rooker's designs for the Oxford Almanack, and it was followed by a substantial group of early drawings and sketches remarkable for the astonishingly rapid technical progress they display. His most important early commission was for 10 watercolours to be engraved as headpieces for the Oxford Almanack, the first of which was published in 1799. This book brings together all his views of the city and discusses the circumstances surrounding the genesis of these works. They include watercolours by the teenage artist, watercolours commissioned for the Oxford Almanack together with preparatory works and finished watercolours for several projects in the 1820s and 1830s, when Turner was at the height of his powers. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Aggiungi al carrellopaperback. Condizione: COME NUOVO. Weimin He's 324 ink drawings, pen sketches and woodblock prints comprise an intimate record of the progress of construction in the newly designed Ashmolean Museum that opened late last year. An unusual approach to documentation in the age of digital photography, the catalogue provides a delightful art experience for readers who will never set foot in the Ashmolean, which is the museum for the University of Oxford. Weimin has drawn workers lifting roof beams, welding metal rods and pouring cement into the mixer. He gives us behind-the-scenes portraits of museum personnel, making each individual come alive, for example, an objects conservator at her work and a researcher in the prints room at his. An artist-in-residence at the museum and an art scholar, Weimin employed Chinese drawing and woodblock printmaking methods. His portraits were drawn on pi, xuan papers or album leaves, with Chinese brushes and inks that have been used for over a millennium. Seven of the prints and the catalogue were presented to Queen Elizabeth for the museum's opening. cm.24,5x29, pp.160, Oxford, Ashmolean Museum cm.24,5x29, pp.160, paperback.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. This is a guide to the Hope Collection, which contains more than 80,000 portraits ranging from the 16th to the 20th centuries. It is one of the most important resources of its kind in the country, containing much material that is not available in either the British Museum or the National Portrait Gallery. It was originally presented to the University of Oxford in 1865 and has been added to ever since. Approximately half the collection consists of British portraits - royalty, nobility and distinguished members of the clergy, literary or military figures, scientists, lawyers and artists. Examples include Sir Francis Drake, Oliver Cromwell, John Wesley and Charles Dickens. There is an equal number of portraits of international figures, ranging from Queen Christine of Sweden (reigned 1632-54) to Simon Bolivar, Garibaldi and Jenny Lind in the 19th century. Few of the portraits have ever been reproduced. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. The Ashmolean Museum, founded in 1683, has strong claims to be the oldest surviving institutional museum open to the public, yet, it is also the private museum of the University of Oxford. Over the centuries a continuing pattern of generous benefaction has accumulated astonishing collections in the university, and those in the fields of art and archaeology are concentrated in the Ashmolean. They range in time, from finds seven or eight thousand years old to 20th-century masterpieces. This illustrated volume provides examples of: Early-Chinese bronzes, Ancient Egyptian artefacts, sculptures and coins from classical Greece and Rome, Anglo-Saxon glass, Chinese porcelain, Indian sculpture and manuscript illustration, Islamic ceramics and Japanese screen paintings. Over half the volume is devoted to reproductions from the museum's magnificent holdings of European art - silver, maiolica, porcelain, bronzes and marbles - together with paintings, watercolours and drawings. Works by Giotto, Giorgione, Uccello and Raphael, by Rembrandt and Rubens, by the French Impressionists and by English artists from Gainsborough to Stanley Spencer. The late Sir David Piper, Director of the Ashmolean Museum from 1973-85, compiled the original edition prior to his retirements in 1985. This new edition illustrates additional artefacts, paintings and drawings acquired by the museum during the last decade, selected and described by the present Director, Professor Christopher White. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. The rise of Modernism, from the early nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth, was played out with particular intensity in France, especially in Paris where international artists were drawn by salons and dealers, the creative exchanges between poets and painters, and the bohemian atmosphere of such places as Montmartre and Montparnasse. This catalogue traces a course from Neo-Classical and Romantic artists like David, Ingres, Gericault and Delacroix, through Impressionists and Post-Impressionists like Degas, Monet and Seurat, to the ground-breaking experiments of Picasso and Braque; but it also shows that there was no straight line leading from tradition to the shock of abstraction. The story is altogether more interesting as academic artists and members of the avant-garde exchanged ideas and as rivalries developed between different schools and powerful characters. In works by Manet, Cezanne, Degas, Cassatt, van Gogh, Matisse, Leger and Picasso, this catalogue explores the artists who created Modernism and how they did it. At the heart of the story is a choice group of works by Picasso, Braque and other artists who first experimented with Cubism. Examples include an early study by Picasso for Les Demoiselles d Avignon of 1906 7, and oil paintings and works on paper produced by artists who exhibited at the first public showing of Cubism, the Salon des Independants of 1911, and other landmark exhibitions, including Leger and important, but now lesser-known figures like Juan Gris, Albert Gleizes, Jean Metzinger and Jacques Villon. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
