Widely hailed as the greatest painter of the Dutch Golden Age, Rembrandt was also one of the most innovative and experimental printmakers of the seventeenth century. Rembrandt was extraordinary in creating prints not merely as multiples to be distributed but also as artistic expressions by using the etching printmaking technique for the sketchy compositions so typical of him. Almost drawing-like in appearance, these images were created by combining spontaneous lines with his remarkable sense for detail. Rembrandt was a keen observer and this clearly shows in his choice of subjects for his etchings: intense self-portraits with their penetrating gaze; atmospheric views of the Dutch countryside; lifelike beggars seen in the streets of his native Leiden; intimate family portraits as well as portrayals of his wealthy friends in Amsterdam; and biblical stories illustrated with numerous figures. This book illustrates the full range of Camille Pissarro's work from the 1850's through to one of his last pictures, painted from his window in Le Havre in 1903 - Quai au Havre. A close friend of Cezanne and Monet, he was the only member of the group to exhibit in all eight Impressionist exhibitions between 1874-86. His eldest son, Lucien (1863-1944), settled in England in 1890 and became a founder member of the Camden Town Group. Also a wood engraver, he founded the Eragny Press named after his parents' village in France. This book also touches on the work of Lucien's younger brothers - Georges, Felix, Ludovic-Rudolphe and Paul-Emile, and of Lucien's daughter Orovida (1893-1968) who developed her own individual style as an etcher and painter, and, with her mother, presented Lucien's collection of family works to the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Edward Lear, born in 1812, was a British artist, illustrator, author, and poet, renowned today primarily for his literary nonsense, in poetry and prose, and especially his limericks, a form that he popularised. Lear produced the illustrated poetry collection Book of Nonsense (1846) for the Earl of Derby's grandchildren. His other works include Nonsense Songs, Stories, Botany and Alphabets (1871), containing "The Owl and the Pussy-Cat", and "Laughable Lyrics" (1877). Three illustrated nonsense alphabets were published in Lear's lifetime, and a further three in the fifth, posthumous edition of Nonsense Botany and Nonsense Alphabets of 1889. A number survive in manuscripts. Lear seems to have begun making nonsense alphabets in the mid-1850s, usually for children of his friends and acquaintances. The present alphabet was created for Ruth Decie. Lear had met her parents, Captain Richard Decie and his wife Bella, in Corfu in the preceding winter, and later stayed with Bella's parents, William and Arabella Prescott, at their home, Clarence House, Roehampton. It was during a visit to Roehampton that Lear noted in his diary for 22 June 1862 that he had 'made an alphabet for the Decie baby', who was only a few days old at the time. It is one of the most charming of all Lear's alphabets, typically drawn on sheets of blue writing paper backed with linen. The alphabet was bequeathed to the Ashmolean by a descendant of Ruth Decie, James Farquharson, who died in December 2011. This beautiful facsimile features a short introduction about Edward Lear, written by the Ashmolean curator, Colin Harrison. Following this is a replica of each page of the original publication featuring the letters of the alphabet with the short poem underneath each drawing. This will be accompanied by each poem again, this time written in a more accessible font so that children may read this too. The year 2000 marks the centenary of the start of excavations at the site of Knossos on Crete, the centre of a Bronze Age civilisation which its excavator, Arthur Evans, called 'Minoan' after King Minos of Greek legend. The palace which he uncovered there was originally decorated with frescoed wall paintings, some of them showing figured scenes, which mostly survived only in a fragmentary and incomplete state. One of the most striking fresco images, and one which particularly engaged Evans's imagination, is the controversial figure of the Priest-King, whom Evans regarded as a portrayal of one of the priestly rulers of Knossos.
