Ein tadelloses Exemplar. - Zusammenfassung: Im Folgenden soll untersucht werden, was wir von einer Moraltheorie in bezug auf Gründe und Motive, Tiere nicht zu töten, erwarten dürfen. Eine Moraltheorie, die sich nicht auf die bloße Bestandsaufnahme der Alltagsmoral beschränken will, entfernt sich bis zu einem gewissen Grade von tief verwurzelten moralischen Selbstverständlichkeiten. So wird die Annahme, Menschen seien mehr wert oder hätten automatisch einen höheren moralischen Status als Tiere, als Vorurteil zugunsten der eigenen Spezies entlarvt. Nicht alle Menschen sind allen Tieren geistig überlegen - man denke nur an Neugeborene oder geistig schwer Behinderte; und die moralische Relevanz höherer geistiger Fähigkeiten für die Begründung des Tötungsverbotes läßt sich bezweifeln. Geistige Vorzüge verleihen moralisch betrachtet keine Vorrechte, sondern sie verpflichten. Die Tötung von Tieren erscheint im Lichte einer kritischen Moral als höchst bedenklicher Eingriff. Doch kann uns der moralische Standpunkt in bezug auf Wesen ohne Sanktions- und Verhandlungspotential hinreichend motivieren? Es gehört zur Kernaussage des hier vertretenen ethischen Externalis-mus, daß die Lücke zwischen moralischen Gründen und Motiven nicht durch zwingende Argumente, sondern nur durch Sanktionen und eine Erziehung zur Selbstachtung geschlossen werden kann. Dies trifft vor allem auf die stark asymmetrischen Beziehungen zu Kleinkindern, geistig schwer Behinderten und Tieren zu. An die Stelle der moralischen Wechselseitigkeit zwischen erwachsenen Personen tritt eine einseitige Verpflichtung, die man in der Sympathie für alle leidenden Wesen verankern könnte. Da jedoch die natürlichen Sympathien der Menschen sehr begrenzt sind, müssen wir unseren Kindern bereits in der moralischen Erziehung (und uns selber im inneren Monolog der Selbsterziehung) eine komplementäre künstliche Tugend zulegen, die darin besteht, Ausbeutung von Wehrlosigkeit und Unwissenheit als besonders beschämend und unfair zu empfinden.
