Neuware -This volume began as the last part of a one-term graduate course given at the Fields Institute for Research in the Mathematical Sciences in the Autumn of 1993. The course was one of four associated with the 1993-94 Fields Institute programme, which I helped to organise, entitled 'Artin L-functions'. Published as [132]' the final chapter of the course introduced a manner in which to construct class-group valued invariants from Galois actions on the algebraic K-groups, in dimensions two and three, of number rings. These invariants were inspired by the analogous Chin burg invariants of [34], which correspond to dimensions zero and one. The classical Chinburg invariants measure the Galois structure of classical objects such as units in rings of algebraic integers. However, at the 'Galois Module Structure' workshop in February 1994, discussions about my invariant (0,1 (L/ K, 3) in the notation of Chapter 5) after my lecture revealed that a number of other higher-dimensional co homological and motivic invariants of a similar nature were beginning to surface in the work of several authors. Encouraged by this trend and convinced that K-theory is the archetypical motivic cohomology theory, I gratefully took the opportunity of collaboration on computing and generalizing these K-theoretic invariants. These generalizations took several forms - local and global, for example - as I followed part of number theory and the prevalent trends in the 'Galois Module Structure' arithmetic geometry.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 324 pp. Englisch.

It extends these notions to assess changes associated with disease in the hope to contribute to the understanding of pathogenetic processes in medicine. The book is the first comprehensive presentation of the importance of the new concept of fractal geometry for biological and medical sciences. It collates in a logical sequence extended papers based on invited lectures and free communications presented at a symposium in Ascona, Switzerland, attended by leading scientists in this field, among them the originator of fractal geometry, Benoit Mandelbrot. 'Fractals in Biology and Medicine' begins by asking how the theoretical construct of fractal geometry can be applied to biomedical sciences and then addresses the role of fractals in the design and morphogenesis of biological organisms as well as in molecular and cell biology. The consideration of fractal structure in understanding metabolic functions and pathological changes is a particularly promising avenue for future research. 397 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -One of the key concerns in modern control theory is the design of steering strategies. The implementation of such strategies is done by a regulator. Presented here is a self-contained introduction to the mathematical background of this type of regulator design. The topics selected address the matter of greatest interest to the control community, at present, namely, when the design objective is the reduction of the influence of exogeneous disturbances upon the output of the system. In a first scenario the disturbance signal is regarded as a deterministic time series with known dynamics but unknown parameters. The design objective is then the asymptotic disturbance compensation. In a second scenario, no information about the disturbance signal is available apart from some bounds. Here, in an H-approach, control strategies are worked out which will prove efficient for all such disturbances. The intention of this book is to present ideas and methods on such a level that the beginning graduate student will be able to follow current research. New results are included, especially for nonlinear control systems, and as a service to the reader, an extensive appendix presents topics from linear algebra, invariant manifolds and calculus of variations, information which is hardly to be found in standard textbooks. Yet many is sues remain unclear, in particular, the reasons for rejecting Young's theory of light. It appears that further progress in the field requires a better grasp of the overall situation in optics and related subjects at the time and a more thorough study of every factor suggested to be of importance for the dispute. This book is intended to be a step in this direction. It examines the impact of the concept of interference of light on the development of the early nineteenth century optics in general, and the theory of light, in particular. This is not a his tory of the wave theory of light, nor is it a history of the debate on the nature of light in general: it covers only that part of the controversy which involved the concept of interference. Although the book deals with a number of scientists, scientific institutions, and journals, its main character is a scientific concept, the principle of interference. While discussing the reasons for accepting or rejecting this concept I have primarily focused on scientific factors, although in some cases the human factor is examined as well. The book is a revised Ph. D. dissertation (University of Minnesota, 1984) writ ten under Alan E. Shapiro. 271 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Three-dimensional topology includes two vast domains: the study of geometric structures on 3-manifolds and the study of topological invariants of 3-manifolds, knots, etc. This book belongs to the second domain. We shall study an invariant called the maximal abelian torsion and denoted T. It is defined for a compact smooth (or piecewise-linear) manifold of any dimension and, more generally, for an arbitrary finite CW-complex X. The torsion T(X) is an element of a certain extension of the group ring Z[Hl(X)]. The torsion T can be naturally considered in the framework of simple homotopy theory. In particular, it is invariant under simple homotopy equivalences and can distinguish homotopy equivalent but non homeomorphic CW-spaces and manifolds, for instance, lens spaces. The torsion T can be used also to distinguish orientations and so-called Euler structures. Our interest in the torsion T is due to a particular role which it plays in three-dimensional topology. First of all, it is intimately related to a number of fundamental topological invariants of 3-manifolds. The torsion T(M) of a closed oriented 3-manifold M dominates (determines) the first elementary ideal of 7fl (M) and the Alexander polynomial of 7fl (M). The torsion T(M) is closely related to the cohomology rings of M with coefficients in Z and ZjrZ (r ;::: 2). It is also related to the linking form on Tors Hi (M), to the Massey products in the cohomology of M, and to the Thurston norm on H2(M). 212 pp. Englisch.

Population geneti cists have proclaimed a centerstage role in developing conservation biology theory and applications. However, we must critically reexamine what we know and how we can make rational contributions. We ask: Is genetic variation really important for the persistence of species Has any species become extinct because it ran out of genetic variation or because of inbreeding depression Are demographic and environmental stochas ticity by far more important for the fate of a population or species than genetic stochasticity (genetic drift and inbreeding) Is there more to genetics than being a tool for assessing reproductive units and migration rates Does conventional wisdom on inbreeding and 'magic numbers' or rules of thumb on critical effective population sizes (MVP estimators) reflect any useful guidelines in conservation biology What messages or guidelines from genetics can we reliably provide to those that work with conservation in practice Is empirical work on numerous threatened habitats and taxa gathering population genetic information that we can use to test these guidelines These and other questions were raised in the invitation to a symposium on conservation genetics held in May 1993 in pleasant surroundings at an old manor house in southern Jutland, Denmark. 443 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The last decades have demonstrated that quantum mechanics is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for contemporary mathematical physics. Of course, it seems to be hardly surprising if one casts a glance toward the history of the subject; recall the pioneering works of von Neumann, Weyl, Kato and their followers which pushed forward some of the classical mathematical disciplines: functional analysis, differential equations, group theory, etc. On the other hand, the evident powerful feedback changed the face of the 'naive' quantum physics. It created a contem porary quantum mechanics, the mathematical problems of which now constitute the backbone of mathematical physics. The mathematical and physical aspects of these problems cannot be separated, even if one may not share the opinion of Hilbert who rigorously denied differences between pure and applied mathemat ics, and the fruitful oscilllation between the two creates a powerful stimulus for development of mathematical physics. The International Conference on Mathematical Results in Quantum Mechan ics, held in Blossin (near Berlin), May 17-21, 1993, was the fifth in the series of meetings started in Dubna (in the former USSR) in 1987, which were dedicated to mathematical problems of quantum mechanics. A primary motivation of any meeting is certainly to facilitate an exchange of ideas, but there also other goals. The first meeting and those that followed (Dubna, 1988; Dubna, 1989; Liblice (in the Czech Republic), 1990) were aimed, in particular, at paving ways to East-West contacts. 358 pp. Englisch.

Laplace transformation methods provide easy and effective techniques for solving many problems arising in various fields of science and engineering, especially for solving differential equations. What the Laplace transformation does in the field of differential equations, the z-transformation achieves for difference equations. The two theories are parallel and have many analogies. Laplace and z transformations are also referred to as operational calculus, but this notion is also used in a more restricted sense to denote the operational calculus of Mikusinski. This book does not use the operational calculus of Mikusinski, whose approach is based on abstract algebra and is not readily accessible to engineers and scientists. The symbolic computation capability of Mathematica can now be used in favor of the Laplace and z-transformations. The firstversion of the Mathematica Package LaplaceAndzTransforrns developed by the author appeared ten years ago. The Package computes not only Laplace and z-transforms but also includes many routines from various domains of applications. Upon loading the Package, about one hundred and fifty new commands are added to the built-in commands of Mathematica. The code is placed in front of the already built-in code of Laplace and z-transformations of Mathematica so that built-in functions not covered by the Package remain available. The Package substantially enhances the Laplace and z-transformation facilities of Mathematica. The book is mainly designed for readers working in the field of applications. 516 pp. Englisch.

These notions are intermediates between ordinary geometric convexity and pseudoconvexity. Their importance was first manifested in the pioneering work of André Martineau from about forty years ago. Since then a large number of new related results have been obtained by many different mathematicians. The present book puts the modern theory of complex linear convexity on a solid footing, and gives a thorough and up-to-date survey of its current status. Applications include the Fantappié transformation of analytic functionals, integral representation formulas, polynomial interpolation, and solutions to linear partial differential equations. 180 pp. Englisch.

Some two dozen clinical studies have strongly suggested that conventional anti-inflammatory drugs may be useful to delay the onset or slow the progression of the disorder. Moreover, virtually all the major systems of the innate immune response appear to be present, and most are upregulated, in pathologically-vulnerable regions of the AD brain. These new findings are described in this volume - first in overview form, followed by chapters on topics of special interest. In many ways, to understand AD brain inflammation, one need only review a text on peripheral inflammation biology, leaving out the chapters on humoral medi ators and substituting microglia for macrophages. In several other key respects, however, AD brain inflammation is unique, due primarily to idiosyncratic interac tions of inflammatory mediators and mechanisms with classical AD pathology: amyloid ~ peptide(A~) deposits and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs). For this reason, some key concepts about the inflammation that occurs in AD may warrant discus sion in preparation for the more detailed chapters that follow. 284 pp. Englisch.

Modern computers allow the implementation of highly accurate ones; hence, their construction and investigation for various boundary value problems in mathematical physics is generating much current interest. The present monograph is devoted to the construction of highly accurate difference schemes for parabolic boundary value problems, based on Padé approximations. The investigation is based on a new notion of positivity of difference operators in Banach spaces, which allows one to deal with difference schemes of arbitrary order of accuracy. Establishing coercivity inequalities allows one to obtain sharp, that is, two-sided estimates of convergence rates. The proofs are based on results in interpolation theory of linear operators. This monograph will be of value to professional mathematicians as well as advanced students interested in the fields of functional analysis and partial differential equations. 353 pp. Englisch.

Locally, we have tried to reorganise some ofthe material to make the book more coherent. Hence, for instance, the collective (Audin, Lalonde, Polterovich) chapter on Lagrangian submanifolds and the appendices added to some of the chapters. Duval was not able to write up his lectures, so that genuine complex analysis will not appear in the book, although it is a very current tool in symplectic and contact geometry (and conversely). Hamiltonian systems and variational methods were the subject of some of Sikorav's talks, which he also was not able to write up. On the other hand, F. Labourie, who could not be at the school, wrote a chapter on pseudo-holomorphic curves in Riemannian geometry. 331 pp. Englisch.

When the size of the cylinder goes to infinity, the solutions, under certain symmetry conditions, are expected to be identical in every cross-section of the domain. The proof of this, however, is sometimes difficult and almost never given in the literature. The present book partially fills this gap by providing proofs of the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to various important cases of linear and nonlinear problems in the theory of elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations. The book is a valuable resource for graduates and researchers in applied mathematics and for engineers. Many results presented here are original and have not been published elsewhere. They will motivate and enable the reader to apply the theory to other problems in partial differential equations. 192 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In several proofs from the theory of finite-dimensional Lie algebras, an essential contribution comes from the Jordan canonical structure of linear maps acting on finite-dimensional vector spaces. On the other hand, there exist classical results concerning Lie algebras which advise us to use infinite-dimensional vector spaces as well. For example, the classical Lie Theorem asserts that all finite-dimensional irreducible representations of solvable Lie algebras are one-dimensional. Hence, from this point of view, the solvable Lie algebras cannot be distinguished from one another, that is, they cannot be classified. Even this example alone urges the infinite-dimensional vector spaces to appear on the stage. But the structure of linear maps on such a space is too little understood; for these linear maps one cannot speak about something like the Jordan canonical structure of matrices. Fortunately there exists a large class of linear maps on vector spaces of arbi trary dimension, having some common features with the matrices. We mean the bounded linear operators on a complex Banach space. Certain types of bounded operators (such as the Dunford spectral, Foiadecomposable, scalar generalized or Colojoara spectral generalized operators) actually even enjoy a kind of Jordan decomposition theorem. One of the aims of the present book is to expound the most important results obtained until now by using bounded operators in the study of Lie algebras. 232 pp. Englisch.

In modern works, this bracket is derived from a symplectic structure, and it appears as one of the main in gredients of symplectic manifolds. In fact, it can even be taken as the defining clement of the structure (e.g., [TIl]). But, the study of some mechanical sys tems, particularly systems with symmetry groups or constraints, may lead to more general Poisson brackets. Therefore, it was natural to define a mathematical structure where the notion of a Poisson bracket would be the primary notion of the theory, and, from this viewpoint, such a theory has been developed since the early 19708, by A. Lichnerowicz, A. Weinstein, and many other authors (see the references at the end of the book). But, it has been remarked by Weinstein [We3] that, in fact, the theory can be traced back to S. Lie himself [Lie]. 206 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -These notes are based on lectures given at the University of Virginia over the past twenty years. They may be viewed as a course in function theory for nonspecialists. Chapters 1-6 give the function-theoretic background to Hardy Classes and Operator Theory, Oxford Mathematical Monographs, Oxford University Press, New York, 1985. These chapters were written first, and they were origi nally intended to be a part of that book. Half-plane function theory continues to be useful for applications and is a focal point in our account (Chapters 5 and 6). The theory of Hardy and Nevanlinna classes is derived from proper ties of harmonic majorants of subharmonic functions (Chapters 3 and 4). A selfcontained treatment of harmonic and subharmonic functions is included (Chapters 1 and 2). Chapters 7-9 present concepts from the theory of univalent functions and Loewner families leading to proofs of the Bieberbach, Robertson, and Milin conjectures. Their purpose is to make the work of de Branges accessible to students of operator theory. These chapters are by the second author. There is a high degree of independence in the chapters, allowing the material to be used in a variety of ways. For example, Chapters 5-6 can be studied alone by readers familiar with function theory on the unit disk. Chapters 7-9 have been used as the basis for a one-semester topics course. 250 pp. Englisch.

The main struc tural difference is that all the material on the theory of finite noncooperative games has been collected in Chapter 2, with renumbering of the material of the remain ing chapters. New sections have been added in this chapter: devoted to general questions of equilibrium theory in nondegenerate games, subsections 3.9-3.17, by N.N. Vorob'ev, Jr.; and 4, by A.G. Chernyakov; and 5, by N.N. Vorob'ev, Jr., on the computational complexity of the process of finding equilibrium points in finite games. It should also be mentioned that subsections 3.12-3.14 in Chapter 1 were written by E.B. Yanovskaya especially for the Russian edition. The author regrets that the present edition does not reflect the important game-theoretical achievements presented in the splendid monographs by E. van Damme (on the refinement of equilibrium principles for finite games), as well as those by J.e. Harsanyi and R. Selten, and by W. Giith and B. Kalkofen (on equilibrium selection). When the Russian edition was being written, these direc tions in game theory had not yet attained their final form, which appeared only in quite recent monographs; the present author has had to resist the temptation of attempting to produce an elementary exposition of the new theories for the English edition; readers of this edition will find only brief mention of the new material. 496 pp. Englisch.

There were 78 registered participants from 14 different countries, and 56 presentations were given. The preceding conferences in this series were held in Cologne (1981, 1985) and in Bonn (1990). Also at the other side of the Atlantic special multigrid conferences are held regularly, at intervals of two years, always in Copper Mountain, Colorado, US. The Sixth Copper Mountain Conference on Multigrid Methods took place in April, 1993. Circumstances prevented us from putting a larger time interval between the Copper and Amsterdam meetings. The next European meeting is planned in 1996, a year later than the next Copper Meeting. When the first multigrid conference was held in 1981 there was no doubt about the usefulness of a conference dedicated specially to multigrid, because multigrid was a new and relatively unexplored subject, still in a pioneering stage, and pursued by specialists. The past twenty years have shown a rapid growth in theoretical understanding, useful applications and widespread acceptance of multi grid in the applied disciplines. Hence, one might ask whether there is still a need today for conferences specially dedicated to multigrid. The general consensus is that the answer is affirmative. New issues have arisen that are best addressed or need also be addressed from a special multigrid point of view. 358 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The collection of papers in this volume represents recent advances in the under standing of the geometry and topology of singularities. The book covers a broad range of topics which are in the focus of contemporary singularity theory. Its idea emerged during two Singularities workshops held at the University of Lille (USTL) in 1999 and 2000. Due to the breadth of singularity theory, a single volume can hardly give the complete picture of today's progress. Nevertheless, this collection of papers provides a good snapshot of what is the state of affairs in the field, at the turn of the century. Several papers deal with global aspects of singularity theory. Classification of fam ilies of plane curves with prescribed singularities were among the first problems in algebraic geometry. Classification of plane cubics was known to Newton and classification of quartics was achieved by Klein at the end of the 19th century. The problem of classification of curves of higher degrees was addressed in numerous works after that. In the paper by Artal, Carmona and Cogolludo, the authors de scribe irreducible sextic curves having a singular point of type An (n 15) and a large (Le. , :::: 18) sum of Milnor numbers of other singularities. They have discov ered many interesting properties of these families. In particular they have found new examples of so-called Zariski pairs, i. e. 260 pp. Englisch.

The meeting took place during the week of September 24-29, 2000 at the now well-known 'Haus Bommerholz', the guest-house of the University of Dortmund. It hosted 43 participants from 16 countries, and the program included 9 invited one-hour lectures, 21 contributed talks, and two problem sessions. The articles collected here are carefully peer-refereed and suitably edited for publication. Following the tradition of this series of conferences, the meeting was aimed at advancing selected topics of Multivariate Approximation Theory. These include approximation on compact sets (such as spheres, balls, or compact ho mogeneous manifolds), spherical designs and energy functionals, interpolation by radial basis functions and by splines, frame theory and Gabor analysis, re finable function systems and subdivision, properties of harmonic, polyharmonic and blending functions, sampling and data compression, among others. The editors would like to express their thanks to all who have given their sup port to the conference, and to the preparation of this book. In particular, our thanks go to the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft for their funding of the con ference, to the University of Dortmund, and to the staff of Haus Bommerholz for their help running the conference, and to the Universities of Dortmund and Duisburg for the financial support of this proceedings volume. 268 pp. Englisch.

The confer ence took place during the EXPO 2000 and was sponsored by the Land Nieder sachsen, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, the Bergstadt Clausthal-Zellerfeld and the Kreissparkasse Clausthal-Zellerfeld. This conference continues a series: Ludwigfelde 1976, Reinhardsbrunn 1985, Holz hau 1988, Breitenbrunn 1990, Lambrecht 1991 (proceedings in Operator Theory: Advances and Applications, Vol. 57, Birkhauser Verlag 1992), Potsdam 1992 and 1993, Holzhau 1994 (proceedings in Operator Theory: Advances and Applications, Vol. 78, Birkhauser Verlag 1995), Caputh 1995 and Potsdam 1996 (proceedings in Mathematical Research, Vol. 100, Akademie Verlag 1997). The intention of the organizers was to bring together specialists from different areas of modern analysis, mathematical physics and geometry, to discuss not only the recent progress in their own fields but also the interaction between these fields. The special topics of the conference were spectral and scattering theory, semiclas sical and asymptotic analysis, pseudodifferential operators and their relation to geometry, as well as partial differential operators and their connection to stochas tic analysis and to the theory of semigroups. The scientific advisory board of the conference in Clausthal consisted of M. Ben Artzi (Jerusalem), Chen Hua (Peking), M. Demuth (Clausthal), T. Ichinose (Kanazawa), 1. Rodino (Thrin), B.-W. Schulze (Potsdam) and J. Sjostrand (Paris). 368 pp. Englisch.
