Later, the notion of a symbol was extended to multidimensional singular integral operators (of arbitrary dimension) [57, 58, 21, 22]. Subsequently, the synthesis of singular integral, and differential operators [2, 8, 9]led to the theory of pseudodifferential operators [17, 35] (see also [35(1)-35(17)]\*), which are naturally characterized by their symbols. An important role in the construction of symbols for many classes of operators was played by Gelfand's theory of maximal ideals of Banach algebras [201. Using this the ory, criteria were obtained for Fredholmness of one-dimensional singular integral operators with continuous coefficients [34 (42)], Wiener-Hopf operators [37], and multidimensional singular integral operators [38 (2)]. The investigation of systems of equations involving such operators has led to the notion of matrix symbol [59, 12 (14), 39, 41]. This notion plays an essential role not only for systems, but also for singular integral operators with piecewise-continuous (scalar) coefficients [44 (4)]. Its devel opments usually are closely related to certain im…portant problems in contemporary mathematics and physics. In the last 20 years, many new theories and interesting results have been discovered. Now, in this direction, the fields are perhaps wider and deeper than ever. This book is devoted to the study of hyponormal and semi-hyponormal operators. The main results we shall present are those of the author and his collaborators and colleagues, as well as some concerning related topics. To some extent, hyponormal and semi-hyponormal opera tors are 'close' to normal ones. Although those two classes of operators contain normal operators as a subclass, what we are interested in are, naturally, nonnormal operators in those classes. With the well-studied normal operators in hand, we cer tainly wish to know the properties of hyponormal and semi-hypo normal operators which resemble those of normal operators. The emphasis was on theoretical aspects of approximation, rather…than the numerical side. Particular importance was placed on the related fields of functional analysis and operator theory. Thirty-nine papers were presented at the conference and one more was subsequently submitted in writing. All of these are included in these proceedings. In addition there is areport on new and unsolved problems based upon a special problem session and later communications from the partici pants. A special role is played by the survey papers also presented in full. They cover a broad range of topics, including invariant subspaces, scattering theory, Wiener-Hopf equations, interpolation theorems, contraction operators, approximation in Banach spaces, etc. The papers have been classified according to subject matter into five chapters, but it needs little emphasis that such thematic groupings are necessarily arbitrary to some extent. The Proceedings are dedicated to the memory of Jean Favard. It was Favard who gave the Oberwolfach Conference of 1963 a special impetus and whose absence was deeply regretted this time. An appreciation of his li fe and contributions was presented verbally by Georges Alexits, while the written version bears the signa tures of both Alexits and Marc Zamansky. At the Oberwolfach Conference more than forty scientists from around the world, in clud…ing applied mathematicians and electrical engineers from industry and universities, presented new results in this area of growing importance. The contributions to this conference are presented in these proceedings. They include contributions on special topics of current interest in circuit and device simulation, as well as contributions that present an overview of the field. In the semiconductor area special lectures were given on mixed finite element methods and iterative procedures for the solution of large linear systems. For three dimensional models new discretization procedures including software packages were presented. Con nections between semiconductor equations and the Boltzmann equation were shown as well as relations to the quantum transport equation. Other issues discussed in this area include the design of simulation programs for semiconductors, vectorcomputers, and interface problems in several dimensions. Topics discussed in the area of circuit simulation include the index classification of differential-algebraic systems, connections with ill-posed problems, and regularization techniques. Split discretization procedures were given for the efficient calculation of periodic solutions of circuits taking into acount the latency. Homotopy methods and new numerical techniques for differential-algebraic systems were presented, and im provements of special numerical methods for standard software packages were sug gested. The semester was sponsored by the Soviet Academy of Sciences and UN ESCO. Since the new building of the Euler Institute was not ready at that moment, the sessions were held in the old building of the Steklov Mathemati cal Institute in the very center of St. Petersburg. Members of the staff of the Euler Institute were doing their best to organize properly the normal processing of the conference-not a simple task at that time because of the complications in the political and economical life in Russia just between the coup d'etat in August and the dismantling of the Soviet Union in December. The papers are mostly devoted to the theory of Toeplitz and model operators. These subjects are consid…ered here from various points of view. Several papers concern the relationships of Toeplitz operators to weighted polynomial approximation. Namely, two papers by B. Solomyak and A. Volberg intensively treat the problem of spectra! multiplicity f~r analytic Toeplitz operators (which are, in fact, multiplication operators) and my paper can serve as an introduction to the problem. This theme of multiplicities is continued in a paper by V. Vasyunin where the multiplicity of the spectrum is computed for Hilbert space contractions with finite defect indices. V. Peller's paper deals with a perturbation theory problem for Toeplitz operators. In a paper by D. Yakubovich a new similarity model for a class of Toeplitz operators is constructed. S. Treil' presents a survey of a part of spectral function theory for vector valued function (Szego-Kolmogorov extreme prob!ems for operator weights, bases of vector rational functions, estimations of Hilbert transform with respect to operator weights, the operator corona problem). As a concluding remark I dare only note that the whole collection convinces us once more without a doubt of the fruitfullness of the natural union of operator theory and complex analysis (if at all the union of these fields is at all different from their intersection). 421 pp. Englisch.

Sparse models form an important component in image understanding, since they emulate the activity of neural receptors in… the primary visual cortex of the human brain. Sparse methods have been utilized in several learning problems because of their ability to provide parsimonious, interpretable, and efficient models. Exploiting the sparsity of natural signals has led to advances in several application areas including image compression, denoising, inpainting, compressed sensing, blind source separation, super-resolution, and classification. The primary goal of this book is to present the theory and algorithmic considerations in using sparse models for image understanding and computer vision applications. To this end, algorithms for obtaining sparse representations and their performance guarantees are discussed in the initial chapters. Furthermore, approaches for designing overcomplete, data-adapted dictionaries to model natural images are described. The development of theory behind dictionary learning involves exploring its connection to unsupervised clustering and analyzing its generalization characteristics using principles from statistical learning theory. An exciting application area that has benefited extensively from the theory of sparse representations is compressed sensing of image and video data. Theory and algorithms pertinent to measurement design, recovery, and model-based compressed sensing are presented. The paradigm of sparse models, when suitably integrated with powerful machine learning frameworks, can lead to advances in computer vision applications such as object recognition, clustering, segmentation, and activity recognition. Frameworks that enhance the performance of sparse models in such applications by imposing constraints based on the prior discriminatory information and the underlying geometrical structure, and kernelizing the sparse coding and dictionary learning methods are presented. The organizing committee was composed of W.N. Everitt (…Birm ingham), L. Losonczi (Debrecen) and W. Walter (Karlsruhe). Dr. A. Kovacec ( Coimbra) served cheerfully and efficiently as secretary of the meeting. The con ference was attended by 44 participants from 20 countries. Yet again the importance of inequalities in both pure and applied mathematics was made evident from the wide range of interests of the individual participants, and from the wealth of new results announced. New inequalities were presented in the usual spread of the subject areas now expected for these meetings: Classical and functional analysis, existence and boundary value problems for both ordinary and partial differential equations, with special contributions to computer science, quantum holography and error analysis. More strongly than ever, the role played by modern electronic computers was made clear in testing out and prohing into the validity and structure of certain inequalities. Here the computer acts not only for numerical calculations of great complexity, but also in symbolic manipulation of complex finite structures. Prob lems in inequalities which even a few years ago were intractable, now fall to solution or receive direct and positive guidance as a result of computer applications. The interface between finite and infinite structures in mathematics and the versatility of modern computers is weil developed in the subject of general inequalities. 508 pp. Englisch.

These include the equations of traditional (neutron) transport theory, radiative transfer, and rarefied gas dynamics, as well as a plethora of additional applications in various areas of physics, chemistry, biology and engineering. The mathematical problems addressed within the monograph deal with existence and uniqueness of solutions of initial-boundary value problems, as well as questions of positivity, continuity, growth, stability, explicit representation of solutions, and equivalence of various formulations of the transport equations under consideration. The reader is assumed to have a certain familiarity with elementary aspects of functional analysis, especially basic semigroup theory, and an effort is made to outline any more specialized topics as they are introduced. Over the past several years there has been substantial progress in developing an abstract mathematical framework for treating linear transport problems. The benefits of such an abstract theory are twofold: (i) a mathematically rigorous basis has been established for a variety of problems which were traditionally treated by somewhat heuristic distribution theory methods; and (ii) the results obtained are applicable to a great variety of disparate kinetic processes. In representation theory they appear as the images of the associated representations of the Lie algebras or of the enveloping algebras on the Garding domain and in quantum field theory they occur as the vector space of field operators or the \*-algebra generated by them. Some of the basic tools for the general theory were first introduced and used in these fields. For instance, the notion of the weak (bounded) commutant which plays a fundamental role in thegeneraltheory had already appeared in quantum field theory early in the six ties. Nevertheless, a systematic study of unbounded operator algebras began only at the beginning of the seventies. It was initiated by (in alphabetic order) BORCHERS, LASSNER, POWERS, UHLMANN and VASILIEV. J1'rom the very beginning, and still today, represen tation theory of Lie groups and Lie algebras and quantum field theory have been primary sources of motivation and also of examples. However, the general theory of unbounded operator algebras has also had points of contact with several other disciplines. In particu lar, the theory of locally convex spaces, the theory of von Neumann algebras, distri bution theory, single operator theory, the momcnt problem and its non-commutative generalizations and noncommutative probability theory, all have interacted with our subject. 368 pp. Englisch.
