Paperback. Tommy Garnett, Bloomings Books Pty Ltd. This is an anthology of articles written by Tommy Garnett for 'The Age' over 15 years in his weekly column 'From the Country'. These provocative articles went beyond basic gardening issues to question a wide range of environmental and cultural assumptions. We see Garnett at his best, revealing a truly enquiring mind and wicked sense of humour. Seddon's commentaries traverse a wide range of themes to illustrate how Garnett, among others, ushered in a new environmental ethos -- which in turn has contributed to our better understanding today -- of what it is to be an Australian. Hardback. Anne Latreille, Bloomings Books Pty Ltd. This book is unique. It is the first book to embark on a study of designers who demonstrate a deep understanding of the Australian environment and an ability to work creatively with it. It provides an invaluable overview of twenty three key garden and landscape designers of Australia. Anne Latreille traces their life stories and achievements. They comprise historic figures, current practitioners, some well-known, others much less so. They work in lush tropical forests and chilly mountains, arid deserts and rolling countryside, beside rivers and the sea, in close packed inner cities and spreading suburbs. They fit each garden design to its place, respecting the natural landscape character. In this way, this book takes us on a journey -- a search for meaning and significance. New and exciting, it reveals a clear and panoramic vision. It moves us inside the designers' hearts and minds and shows how Australian energy and imagination can be transformative, inspiring and progressive. With research extending over fourteen years, it is a vital reference for anyone -- from professional designer to garden lover -- who seeks a broader understanding of designing gardens in Australia, now and in the future. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. AUSTRALIA'S BIRDS OF PREY are exhilarating: the effortless soaring of an eagle, the kestrel's hovering precision, the electrifying pace of a hobby and the controlled glide of a harrier - often so slow, that it must surely stall? These sights so inspired David Hollands that in 1984 he wrote his first book, Eagles Hawks and Falcons of Australia . This magnificent new 444 page book is a lyrical account of these unique birds of prey - a culmination of his life's work. Each of the 25 species has its own chapter and the text is brilliantly complemented by 450 of the author's own dramatic photographs. Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. David Hollands first became aware of owls as a young boy upon hearing the quavering hoot of the Tawny Owl which lived, out of sight, in the woods near his home. Their secrets remained undiscovered but then he came across some spectral Barn Owls in an ancient English barn. These were the first owls that he had watched at close quarters and photographed in the night. It was a magical experience and, by then, that first awareness had progressed and become a lifelong passion. David Hollands came to Australia in 1961and for a while, the demands of running a medical practice put a brake on other activities. Nevertheless, his fascination for birds, owls and photography could never remain submerged for long and, in 1999, he completed 'Birds of the Night' - a comprehensive study in words and photographs of Australia's owls, frogmouths and nightjars. However, David's owl studies continued. There were owls to be pursued around the world and he set out to find and photograph as many as possible. By his own admission, he has succeeded beyond his wildest dreams. The author's love of birds extends beyond owls and he has also written books on Australia's Birds of Prey and on Kingfishers and Kookaburras. All three books won the Whitley Award for the Best Illustrated Australian Natural History book of that year.…
