The starting point is 1214, when Bishop Hugh of Wells introduced the earliest system of episcopal registration in Western Europe. The magnificent series of Lincoln bishop's registers provides a framework for the parish lists, setting out the succession of rectors or vicars for each church. Brief biographical sketches demonstrate the rich variety of the county's parsons - pastors, scholars, travellers and writers, soldiers and schoolmasters; while some, like John Wycliffe, achieved a wider fame. This biographical register gives to each of them their place in the history of Lincolnshire.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) * **The first impression of the true first edition in its original dustwrapper inj very good condition, nicely produced and printed using quality cream acid-free paper. Volume II, June 15 1915-April 20 1919: 1916, 1917, 1918, 1919. ***'Bishop Edward Lee Hicks kept a diary throughout his episcopate at Lincoln from 1910 to 1919. The two foolscap volumes from which this book is edited offer an honest picture of the daily life of a bishop in the period immediately before and during the First World War, a portrait of church and society in a largely rural diocese in the last phase before the radical transformation which the 'Great War' hastened. ***Bishop Hicks had special interest in women's suffrage, the Labour movement and temperance reform; in church affairs he was an advocate of liberal theology and biblical criticism, the development of women's work, a social gospel, and co-operation with the nonconformists; he was also President of the Peace League throughout the period covered by the diaries. The diary presents a largely church-centred picture; but it is also valuable as a personal view of such matters as Lincolnshire social life including the impact of war on the county, conditions of travel at the beginning of the era of the motor car, characteristics of the clergy, and frequent comment on items of archaeological and antiquarian interest. ***Cannon Graham Neville was Canon and Prebendary of Lincoln Cathedral from 1982-1987. He has also been an examining Chaplain to the Archbishop of Canterbury, and, until recently, a tutor with the Open University.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***Of interest to scholars and historians of Lincolnshire local history, World War One and women's suffrage. Contains many fascinating diary entries such as the Zeppelin air-raids, and driving in the black-out by moonlight etc. **The first impression of the true first edition in its original near fine dustwrapper, nicely produced and printed using quality cream acid-free paper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. …

The accounts offer a glimpse of key events in Charles II's reign including the plague in 1665 and the Great Fire of London in 1666. They also reveal how Catherine spent her money.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***'Catherine of Braganza (25 Nov 1638 - 31 Dec 1705) was Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland during her marriage to King Charles II, which lasted from 21 May 1662 until his death on 6 February 1685. She was the daughter of John IV of Portugal, who became the first king from the House of Braganza in 1640, after overthrowing the 60-year rule of the Spanish Habsburgs over Portugal. Catherine served as the regent of Portugal during the absence of her brother Peter II in 1701, and again in 1704-1705, after her return to her homeland as a widow. Owing to her devotion to the Roman Catholic faith in which she had been raised, just like her mother-in-law, Catherine was unpopular in England. She was a special object of attack by the inventors of the Popish Plot. In 1678 the murder of Edmund Berry Godfrey was ascribed to her servants, and Titus Oates accused her of an intention to poison the king. These charges, the absurdity of which was soon shown by cross-examination, nevertheless placed Catherine for some time in great danger. On 28 November 1678, Oates accused Catherine of high treason, and the English House of Commons passed an order for the removal of her and of all Roman Catholics from the Palace of Whitehall. Several further depositions were made against her, and in June 1679 it was decided that she should stand trial, which threat however was lifted by the king's intervention, for which she later showed him much gratitude. Catherine of Braganza is often credited with popularising the custom of drinking tea in England' (Wiki) ***A fascinating historical first edition in virtually fine condition, nicely produced and printed using quality cream acid-free paper. Of interest to scholars and historians of the life of Catherine of Braganza and Charles II, and of the social history of the Restoration period of British history. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…

It takes up the story of the town's government at the point where the Restoration settlement was taking effect and continues through the dramatic events of 1685-88 when King James II sought to impose a more centralised control over the cities and boroughs of the kingdom. Subsidiary themes include the precautions against plague in 1665; shortage of coinage, leading to the issue and recall of the town's half-pennies in 1667-74; references to non-conformity in 1668-69 and the lives of some of the Corporation members. The text, transcribed in full, is accompanied by a detailed introduction, setting the governance of Restoration Grantham in its wider context.'
