Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. THE HAPPY-GO-LUCKY MORGANS, Edward Thomas, with an introduction by Glen Cavaliero, softcover, 1983. BOOK CONDITION: very good. The text block is in fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. The upper righthand corner of the pages is slightly crinkled. Not a remainder nor libr…ary book. No bookplate nor signature of prior owner. The wraps are in very good condition (small crease in upper righthand corner of front; a bit of edge wear). 7 ¾ x 4 ¾, 167 pages, 6 ounces XX [from the back cover] Edward Thomas's only novel has a large element of autobiography in it. Far from being a novel in the orthodox sense, with a plot which unfolds in an orderly fashion, it is an evocation of a time and a place and a group of characters, one of those summings-up of a particular atmosphere at which Thomas excelled. The Morgans live untidily in a large house in a neat road in Balham, on the edge of London; as well as the family, there is the faithful servant Ann and a galaxy of hangers-on. Wales forms a constant spiritual background to the Morgans' existence, and many of the conversations and stories are about their distant homeland, stories told with all the poet's skill. There is a constant tension between impractical reality — Mr Morgan never works and seems always to be on the verge of bankruptcy, yet the impending disaster never comes — and the practical but far less real world outside. Eventually, after a magical spring, Philip Morgan, the narrator's companion, dies, and the family return to Wales, leaving only dim hazed spirits of men and children, dogs and pigeons, ruled by 'a haze of ghostly, shimmering silver. XX [From Wikipedia] Philip Edward Thomas (3 March 1878 - 9 April 1917) was a British writer of poetry and prose. He is sometimes considered a war poet, although few of his poems deal directly with his war experiences. He only started writing poetry at the age of 36, but by that time he had already been a prolific critic, biographer, nature writer and travel writer for two decades. In 1915, he enlisted in the British Army to fight in the First World War and was killed in action during the Battle of Arras in 1917, soon after he arrived in France. Although Edward Thomas's father, Philip Henry Thomas, had left Tredegar for Swindon (and then London) in his early teens, the Welsh connection was … enduring. He continued throughout his life to visit his relatives in south Wales. His feelings for Wales were also manifest in other ways. Between 1898 and 1900, Thomas was a history scholar at Lincoln College, Oxford. In June 1899, he married Helen Berenice Noble (1877-1967) in Fulham, while still an undergraduate, and determined to live his life by the pen. He then worked as a book reviewer, reviewing up to 15 books every week. He was already a seasoned writer by the outbreak of war, having published widely as a literary critic and biographer as well as writing about the countryside. He also wrote a novel, The Happy-Go-Lucky Morgans (1913), a book of delightful disorder.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Tight copy - no internal markings, clean text pages. Original dustjacket - price clipped. B/w illustrations throughout. "Our medieval ancestors moved about far more than we might expect. The many sources quoted reveal the diversity of the medieva…l traveller : princes and their armies, pilgrims, merchants and envoys, even fugitives and spies. Norbert Ohler lets the travellers speak for themselves, and from the many sources builds up a picture of what travel was really like - why people travelled, and how they prepared for the journey; means of transport; hospices and inns; and defence against attack and natural hazards, sickness and starvation. Based largely on material from western Europe, although Byzantium, the Far East, the West Indies and the Islamic world are also included, this book offers a fresh and illuminating perspective on a fascinating aspect of the medieval world.".
