The family has always had strong connections with the Fire Brigade, especially in the West Country, Oxfordshire and Warwickshire. The move to Rugby where David went to the famous School was instrumental in the initial sowing of the seeds of vocation to become a priest. The struggles at college and then finally ordination in Coventry Cathedral led to the life of a parish priest in Coventry, Shottery, Newton Aycliffe and finally Alcester. David describes his life with Hilary and their three sons with amusing stories of parish life interspersed with illustrations of formidable ecclesiastical personalities and ordinary parishioners, and not forgetting that part of pastoral life centred on baptisms, weddings and funerals. Finally he returns to his beloved trains with some dreams of possibilities in his retirement. The journey goes down a branch line, since now that he is retired, the Signalman has swung the points off the main line and he is approaching the buffers.
