Paperback. Condizione: Fine. Augustine's 'Confessions', written at the close of the fourth century CE, is a highly significant text in the history of European culture. Augustine explains just how and why he came to abandon a successful career and the personal enjoyments of a largely secular existence to follow a life of prayer and study, leading to a true comprehension of God and the Bible. The avowed approach of this introductory book is to 'historicise' - to set Augustine's own experiences of religion, philosophy and Christian faith against the long-standing political, cultural and religious traditions of the classical world. Late antiquity saw the transformation of the classical heritage and its transmission by Christian authors. Augustine's ideas about how texts may be presented and read, how people respond to written and spoken language, find resonance in recent critical theory. The world in which Augustine lived, the structure, style and purpose of the Confessions, and the problems of rhetoric and truth posed by its author's personal search for himself are all scrutinised in this lucid introductory account. The volume also offers a useful guide to further reading.; Greece and Rome Live; 104 pages.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Cloth, no dj (as issued). Minor shelf wear. Else a bright, clean copy. Though pastoral seems from its outset to have held the seeds of its own demise (Virgil's tenth Eclogue contemplates the irrelevance of poetry in an increasingly violent world) it has remained curiously persistent as a concept which, according to Empson, 'put(s) the complex into the simple'. Each essay in this carefully selected collection on the uses and abuses of the pastoral genre addresses pastoral as a critical concept from different disciplinary perspectives. The book is firmly rooted in pastoral's classical origins but pioneers the way forward for future study of the pastoral genre. It contains contributions from top international scholars in the field including Paul Alpers and T. K. Hubbard.…

Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. First Edition. 2008. xxiv, 168pp. B&W illustrations. "Obelisks, originally associated with the sun cult, had their heyday between 2000 and 1500 BC, when they adorned the Nile's banks and proclaimed the splendour of the pharaohs. Today, only twenty-seven Egyptian obelisks remain standing and they are scattered in various locations throughout the world. Rome, with thirteen, boasts more than anywhere else, including Egypt itself. These monolithic structures can be seen in every corner of the 'Eternal City' and still hold a fascination for all who gaze upon them. This book is intended as a general guide to the obelisks that have found their way to the four corners of the earth. It examines the interest shown in them by the Roman emperors; it discusses each obelisk in detail, and traces individual histories and anecdotes concerning their journeys from Egypt. The work is illustrated throughout and translations of some of the relevant historical texts are supplied." The book is in excellent condition with no inscriptions.…

Softcover. Condizione: Very Good. Second Edition. Underlining in pencil to a couple of pages. Minor edgewear to front corner of wraps and first few pages.; Ignibus Paperback; 279 pages; This remains the major book on Aeschylus' Supplices, its dating and the trilogy to which it belonged. Its first appearance, in 1969, was a response to the publication of a papyrus fragment from Oxyrhynchus in Egypt, which indicated a late production date (the 460s BC) for Aeschylus' play. This upset the previous consensus that it was the earliest Greek tragedy to survive: there was, Garvie argued, no longer good reason to suppose that the play belonged to an early stage in its author's development. The book also examines the evidence for reconstruction of the other, lost plays of the trilogy. Garvie remains convinced that, even without the additional testimony of the papyrus, all the internal from the text of the play points to the 460s, though some have tried to pull it back to the 470s because it feels like an early play. Some of the salutary lessons to be drawn from the discovery of the papyrus have still to be learnt.…
